AUDITION AREAS & REQUIREMENTS

Jazz
Auditioning for CSU Northridge Jazz Studies --
Jazz Studies applicants now have the opportunity to prepare a recorded audition
and submit it for evaluation at "ArtsApp".

Auditioning via ARTSAPP
Students may submit prescreening recordings online through the CSU Northridge Jazz portal, at www.artsapp.com/csun -- All audition materials should be submitted by December 14, 2011. Please note that ArtsApp is for programs that require prescreening, and a separate application to the University is required [see below]. Students who qualify will be invited to live auditions held on the CSU Northridge campus scheduled for February 2012.

ArtsApp accepts the following format types:

Total portfolio size should be under 6 GB, with a maximum file size of 1.2 GB. Please upload each piece as its own file. If you are uploading a video, please use a broadband connection (plugin your computer, not just wifi) for a faster upload.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS AND PROCEDURE

1 -- Jazz Standards - Winds, Brass, Piano, Guitar, Double Bass, Vibes, Drums/Percussion:

Prepare 3 "standard" tunes:
     1-Medium Swing
     2-Ballad
     3-Straight eighth (bossa nova, samba)

Winds, Brass, Piano, Guitar, Double Bass, Vibes:
     a) Improvise on each tune
     b) Embellish the melody using jazz interpretation
     c) Pianists and Guitarists may play one standard unaccompanied

Drums and Percussion:
     *In addition to the above, prepare a solo piece (2-5 minutes-sticks and brushes) demonstrating various styles including:

     -SWING: med. swing, fast swing, shuffle, funk (hip-hop),
     -STRAIGHT EIGHTHS: straight 8th (bossa nova, mambo, salsa, samba, songo etc.)

 2 -- "Blues" in any key of your choice. Winds, Brass, Piano, Guitar, Double Bass, Vibes:

     • Be able to play a melody (head) and improvise.

Some examples of Standards:
All The Things You Are, Autumn Leaves, Blue Bossa, But Beautiful, Darn That Dream, My Romance, There Will Never Be Another You, Yesterdays, Watch What Happens, Trustee, Like Someone in Love, Take the A Train,There Is No Greater Love.

Some examples of Blues:
Sonny Moon for Two, Tenor Madness, Blues Walk, Straight No Chaser, Footprints, All Blues, Blue Monk, Billie's Bounce, Now's the Time.

"CSUN Originals 0809"- The very latest CSU Northridge Big Band Jazz recording, featuring small groups as well as the Jazz "A" Band - all compositions and arrangements by CSU Northridge jazz students.

"CSUN Originals II - Rain Song" Was released in 2008 and is the Jazz Program's second album to exclusively feature student arrangements and compositions, and features saxophonist Tim Ries as guest soloist.

Jazz A Band at Monterey Jazz Festival

The CSUN Jazz "A" Band is recognized as one of the finest college jazz bands in the nation. The band's recordings are heard on jazz radio stations around the world and have received rave reviews. The newest recording, "CSUN Originals II - Rain Song" was released in 2008 and is the Jazz Program's second album to exclusively feature student arrangements and compositions.

The award-winning CSU Northridge Jazz "A" Band regularly performs at major music festivals including the Monterey and Reno Jazz Festivals. The band has been featured at the conferences of the California Music Educator's Association (CMEA) as well as the International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE) and has toured the Far East, Australia and Europe.

Guest artists with the band include Randy Brecker, Bill Perkins, Bob Florence, Alex Iles, Clay Jenkins,Vince Mendoza, Bob Sheppard, Gordon Goodwin, George Stone, Bob McChesney, Ron Stout, Peter Erskine, Dave Holland, Gary Foster, Bobby Shew, Fred Sturm and many others
