The Major

The Bachelor of Arts degree is designed for those who seek careers in a wide variety of contemporary news and media options, including online and print newspaper/magazine editorial, graphics and photojournalism/videography; television and radio news; new and ethnic media as well as public relations.

Accreditation 

The Department, fully re-accredited in May 2016, is among the 113 U.S. and international programs accredited by the national Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications, and is a member of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication. The program has been continuously accredited since 1967.

Department Programs

Affiliated with the Department of Journalism are eight student-run news media outlets, which include print/online/mobile editions of The Sundial and El Nuevo Sol, plus Scene magazine and the Pop-Up Newsroom, a temporary virtual operation. Journalism students also produce Broadcast programming on multiple platforms: TV newscasts air on “Valley View News," "Matador News" and "On Point," the public affairs multimedia program, “On Point” as well as staff the news operation at KCSN HD2, part of the campus-based public radio station housed in the Valley Performing Arts Center. Public Relations students operate Agency 398, a full-service outlet for both campus and for-profit clients.

Each journalism major is required to complete a collateral field in another discipline, such as history, political science or sociology. A foreign language is strongly recommended.
