IRES 2008 will be hosted by the Universidade Federal do Ceara, in the city of Fortaleza. Fortaleza is located in the North East of Brazil and has some of the most gorgeous beaches in Brazil. The Department of Mathematics has 32 full-time faculty working on mainstream mathematical research. Mathematicians from different parts of the world visit the Math Department of UFC in Fortaleza. To know more about the Math Department visit http://www.mat.ufc.br/
IRES participants will have travel expenses covered (air fare, lodging, visa, health insurance) and will receive a stipend of $1,000 (which is a substantial amount of money in Brazil). They will travel to Brazil on June 27 and will return to the U.S. on August 01. You can choose to stay longer (at your own expense) to stop in Rio Janeiro or any other place in Brazil.
This program will provide an opportunity for American students to conduct research in collaboration with Brazilian students. Students will be encouraged to work in groups, with students from both countries. They will be introduced to possible research problems and to some initial reading material through this website, before traveling to Brazil. This way participants will begin exploring some of the topics, have some ideas and find out their preferences. They will also receive a list of all participants together with respective email addresses, so they can start interacting with each other via email. The topics of research this year are in the areas of Differential geometry and Analysis.
The first weekend of the program, June 28 and 29, will be devoted to orientation and social gathering. American and Brazilian students will be introduced to each other and tour the campus, including the computer labs, library, and offices. In the first week, students will take mini-courses, so they can get familiar with the mathematics that will be used in their research. Towards the end of the first week and after the research problems have been presented to them, groups composed of American and Brazilian participants will be formed. Each group will meet individually with their faculty advisor for at least three hours per week, and faculty will be available every day for an informal question and answer period. In addition, there will be two permanent IRES faculty, M. Helena Noronha and Abdenego Alves de Barros, in charge of coordinating all aspects of the program.
Social activities that promote cultural and social interactions among the participants will be scheduled during weekends. Towards the end of the program, students will give a final presentation and write a final report on their research results. Students who have written reports of publishable quality will then continue to work with their advisors to prepare papers for publication.
To apply submit the following materials:
- A completed application form.
- Two letters of recommendation from faculty that can assess your mathematical strengths.
- A copy of your college transcript (unofficial copies are acceptable).
