This REU in mathematics will be hosted by UNICAMP (Universidade de Campinas), a state University in Sao Paulo. UNICAMP has international recognition and is undoubtedly one of the top three universities in Brazil. Campinas is located in a large industrial center in Sao Paulo state and is surrounded by technological and computational centers. To know more about this Brazilian University go to http://www.unicamp.br/unicamp

Participants will have travel expenses covered (air fare, lodging, visa, health insurance) and will receive a stipend of $1,000. They will travel to Sao Paulo on July 04 and return to the U.S. on August 06. Participants can choose to stay longer (at their own expense) to tour the beautiful beaches of Rio Janeiro or any other place in Brazil.

This REU program will provide an opportunity for five undergraduates to conduct research in collaboration with five Brazilian undergraduate students. Students will be encouraged to work in pairs, one student from each country. They will be introduced to possible research problems and to some initial reading material through this website, before traveling to Brazil. This way participants will begin exploring some of the topics, have some ideas and find out their preferences. They will also receive a list of all participants together with respective email addresses, so they can start interacting with each other via email.

On the first day of the program in Brazil, students will be introduced to each other and to participating faculty members during the orientation meeting. Their orientation will consist of a tour of the campus, including the computer labs, library, offices, and a social gathering. On the second day, groups composed of American and Brazilian participants will be formed and these groups will begin working on their problems with their faculty advisors. Each group will meet individually with their faculty advisor for at least three hours per week, and faculty will be available every day for an informal question and answer period. In addition, there will be two permanent REU faculty, Helena Noronha and Marcelo Firer, in charge of coordinating all aspects of the program.

Social activities that promote cultural and social interactions among the participants will be scheduled during weekends. By the beginning of the third week, students will present a preliminary report, describing their progress. Towards the end of the program, students will give a final presentation and write a final report on their research results. All participants will receive copies of all the reports. Students who have written reports of publishable quality will then continue to work with their advisors to prepare papers for publication.
