Community Supported Agriculture
The Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program at CSUN is in collaboration with Underwood Family Farms in Moorpark, CA. Faculty, staff, and students have the opportunity to sign up for memberships which allows them to receive farm-fresh produce on a weekly basis. The MMC Student Interns will be responsible for supervising and overseeing the distribution location every Tuesday afternoon. There is an opportunity for articles and/or produce points to be written and published on Underwood Family Farms website.
Community Educators
MMC Student Interns will oversee the community nutrition and food science events held by the Marilyn Magaram Center. Students will participate in all health fairs sponsored by the Marilyn Magaram Center or in which the MMC is a participant. Students will provide information about MMC services, general nutrition information, and conduct food demonstrations. Students will also assist in the planning and preparation for the 25th Anniversary events in Fall. Requirement: Completed or currently enrolled in FCS 207
Nutrition and Garden Education
In collaboration with Los Angeles Unified School District, the MMC offers nutrition and/or garden education in local elementary schools. MMC Student Interns will help engage elementary students hands-on in learning about being healthy and growing their own fresh produce. MMC Student Interns will teach about growing fruits and vegetables, the importance of eating healthy, sustainability, and other garden-related topics. Requirement: Completed or currently enrolled in FCS 207
Food Science Lab Assistant
MMC Student Interns will assist and coordinate with the FCS Department Instructional Support Assistant and course instructors using the Thieriot Laboratory (SQ 110/112) to oversee the use, care and maintenance of the equipment and supplies in the lab. Requirement: Completed or currently enrolled in FCS 201
Health Assess
Students will use Food Processor software to conduct nutrient analyses of food records. Analyses may also be completed for recipes provided by outside food manufactures. The MMC Student Interns will also be responsible for creating and distributing marketing and informational materials regarding Dietary Analysis services offered through the MMC. MMC Student Interns will conduct body composition analysis using the Bod Pod. Measurements may also be collected for study subjects involved in research projects undertaken by the MMC and/or FCS faculty. Requirement: Completed or currently enrolled in FCS 307, 321
Glendale Adventist Medical Center
The student volunteer for Glendale Adventist Medical Center will have the opportunity to collect diet orders according to the information obtained through patient visitation and screening, taking into account allergies and functional needs.
Grocery Store Tours
Student volunteers will be trained and prepared to conduct grocery store tours to low-income families with children ranging from 0-5 years old. The tours will be held at stores that are in the vicinity of CSUN. All tours will follow the Cooking Matters curriculum (i.e. reading food labels, comparing unit prices, finding whole grain foods, and identifying three ways to purchase produce), followed with a short cooking demo where participants can take samples as a snack. Requirement: Must have completed S ED 525
Marketing & Social Media
The MMC Student Intern will develop marketing content and materials to showcase the various campus-wide and community-based programs and events coordinated by the Marilyn Magaram Center. Students will be responsible for creating weekly articles and sharing regular social media posts related to the Center, the MMC Internship and students.
