Supplemental Instruction
University 60 classes, Supplemental Instruction (SI), are peer-facilitated group study sessions designed to help students master difficult subject matter in classes with traditionally low pass rates. Students enroll to receive one unit credit or can attend as necessary.
Freshman Composition 155 SI classes require two one-hour peer-facilitated sessions that complement and enrich the lecture sections of Asian American Studies, Chicana/o Studies, English, and Pan African Studies 155 SI. These classes are available to entering freshmen whose EPT scores would otherwise place them in developmental writing. Students receive one credit and regular attendance is mandatory.
The sessions are conducted by juniors, seniors or graduate students who have demonstrated superior competence in the subject area. SI leaders attend the targeted class, read the assigned material, and work with the professors. Sessions focus on understanding content while developing effective study strategies, note taking and problem solving skills, and preparing for exams.
