Test Information

Students are responsible for taking and passing the appropriate test(s) they may need.


ELM (Entry Level Mathematics): http://www.csun.edu/testing/placement/

Description of test: Assesses entry-level mathematical skill levels of entering CSU students. Topics include numbers and data, algebra, and geometry.

Who needs it?: Students who need to enroll in CSUN Math 210, 310, or PHSC 170. Check w/ Admissions and Records regarding exemption.

When should it be taken?: Prior to enrolling in CSUN Math 210, 310, or PHSC 170.

Required for Graduation?: No

Required for Credential?: No


UDWPE (Upper Division Writing Proficiency Exam): http://www.csun.edu/~udwpe1/

Description of test: Proficiency exam to assess writing competency and skills.

Who needs it?: Students intending to graduate from a CSU school.

When should it be taken?: No later than the semester in which 90 units are completed.

Required for Graduation?: Yes

Required for Credential?: Not necessarily. Please consult with the Credential office.


CBEST (California Basic Educational Skills Test): http://www.cbest.nesinc.com/

Description of test: Assess and verify acceptable proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics skills in the English language.

Who needs it?: Students who intend to apply to CSUN's Credential Program.

When should it be taken?: Before applying to CSUN/s Credential Program.

Required for Graduation?: No

Required for Credential?: Yes


CSET:MS (California Subject Exam for Teachers:Multiple Subjects): http://www.cset.nesinc.com/

Description of test:Assessment measuring general and subject-specific pedagogical skills and knowledge.

Who needs it?: Students pursuing the multiple subjects credential who have not demonstrated subject matter competency.

When should it be taken?: ITEP student must pass the CSET prior to student teaching. All others should consult with the Credential office.

Required for Graduation?: No

Required for Credential?: YES


RICA (Reading Instruction Competency Assessment): http://www.rica.nesinc.com

Description of test: Written exam or video performance to demonstrate knowledge and skills important for the provision of effective reading instruction.

Who needs it?: Students pursuing the multiple subjects credential. See Credential program for more information.

When should it be taken?: Immediately after required Reading course in Credential program.

Required for Graduation?: No

Required for Credential?: Yes
