STUDENTS GRADUATE WITH A MINOR IN JEWISH STUDIES

We want to congratulate our students graduating this month with a Minor in Jewish Studies. Each of them completed at least 7 courses in the program on topics that cover Judaism, Jewish history from ancient Israel to contemporary Jewish life, and both religious and non-religious Jewish literature. Graduates this spring include:

Joel Klass, a graduating Religious Studies Major, who will continue to work at the Los Angeles Jewish Historical Society while exploring the possibilities of a career in public school teaching and counseling.

Julia Komras, graduating with a double B.S. in Accounting and in Business Administration with double options in Real Estate and Finance, who will study for her CPA exams as she starts a new job at Price Waterhouse Coopers, a major international accounting firm.

Bobbi Ross, completing her degree in the English Department's Honors program, who is deciding whether to start law school in the fall or continue her work managing a rock band.

Ilana Youngheim, a Major in Broadcast Journalism, who will pursue a career in her field. Ilana's success in obtaining interviews with celebrities such as Jay Leno has brought her to the attention of National Public Radio.

We're very proud of them all!

HOLOCAUST EDUCATION AND PLURALISM IN GERMANY TODAY

Students and faculty attending Professor Tamas Ungvari's "Jews in the Modern Era" class were treated to a fascinating and insightful lecture by Honey Kessler Amado, Los Angeles appellate lawyer and member of the American Jewish Committee national board. Ms. Kessler described her experience as part of a 9-person team of Jews sponsored by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. They were sent to Germany to learn about the country's efforts to foster tolerance of Jews and awareness of the Holocaust.
CSUN STUDENTS LEARN FROM SURVIVORS

In three separate Jewish Studies courses, students had the opportunity to hear first-hand about the Holocaust from survivors. Erika Jacoby discussed her experience in Auschwitz. From Helma and Benno Schneider, students learned about life in the Riga ghetto and hiding in the forest. Michael Mark told of his imprisonment at multiple camps. Students will not forget these lessons!

LA PETITE JERUSALEM

Almost 200 people attended the free screening (April 23, Encino Laemmle Theatre) of the French film "La Petite Jerusalem" and stayed for the discussion led by CSUN Jewish Studies faculty Elaine Goodfriend and Jody Myers. The film portrays North African Jewish immigrants struggling with life in modern-day Paris as they are confronted with growing antisemitism and grapple with sexual freedom, modern rationalism, and loyalty to Jewish religious law.

Stay tuned for the 2006-2007 CSUN Jewish Studies/Laemmle Theatre film screenings, beginning in Fall 2006.

STUDENT RECEIVES JEWISH COMMUNITY AWARD

Michael Hasenfrantz, a student in the class 'Service Learning in the Jewish Community' from Fall 2004, served 100 hours in the Valley Alliance, Los Angeles Jewish Federation, helping on the charitable fund raising campaign. Michael, who was offered a part-time job at the end of his internship, has just been notified that he is the recipient of the Jewish Federation Valley Alliance William Levin Award, which recognizes individuals of exceptional promise.
