NEW: The "1939" Club
Gift to CSUN Jewish Studies Program
Interviews of Holocaust Survivors
The "1939 Club," the largest and
most active organization of Holocaust survivor organizations, has
donated DVDs of its Survivors' Holocaust Testimonies to the CSUN
Jewish Studies Program. The DVD's will be catalogued and available
to students and the public in the university's Oviatt Library. In
return, CSUN's unique collection of interviews with child
survivors, which were conducted and videotaped by emeritus
Professor of Educational Psychology Sarah Moskovitz, is being
transferred onto DVD and will be given to The "1939" Club for its
collection. Since 1992, CSUN's Jewish Studies Program has
collaborated with The "1939" Club in educating students about the
Holocaust, and we are thrilled to be a part of this exciting joint
project.

Events
An Inspiring Public Lecture
Maggie Anton, a scientist and CSUN alum, told a full auditorium of
students, faculty, and community members about how her interest in
studying Talmud eventually led to her book Rashi's Daughters:
Joheved. Anton described her research findings in Jewish law and
the daily lives of medieval men and women, and what the
implications of those findings have for our lives today. Students
from a wide range of ethnic and religious backgrounds who were in
attendance reported being inspired both by Anton's research and her
life-long commitment to learning

Pre-screening and Discussion of Film
"Ushpizin"
More than 200 people attended the Encino Laemmle Theater on October
16 to watch this award-winning Israeli film. The crowd was
extremely enthusiastic about the film (which may still be seen at
Laemmle Theaters in Los Angeles), and most stayed to engage in a
discussion with CSUN Professors Jody Myers and Linda Yellin about
the film's outlook on religious faith today. The event was
co-sponsored by Valley Beth Shalom and Temple Judea. Be on the
lookout for similar film programs in the winter!
