JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching) Program
The Japanese Ministries of Education and Foreign Affairs employ 6,000 native speakers of English (about 2,000 of them from the U.S., about 300 from the area under the jurisdiction of Los Angeles Consulate) every year to assist English teachers in Japan. Those fluent in Japanese can apply for a CIR (cultural information relations) position to work in local governments. The program pays a round-trip air fare and about 3 million yen a year. One can renew the contract up to 4 years. Applicants must have a bachelor's degree and be under 40 years of age for this "youth" exchange program. The application is due on December 8 for a departure in the summer of the following year.
