Connecting to CSUN Using Windows XP Dial–Up Networking
Please Note:
These instructions are for users who already have a Web browser installed on their computer (e.g., Netscape or Microsoft Explorer).
The campus dial–in service telephone number is (818) 677–6700. Keep in mind dial–in is not allowed from phone numbers with caller ID blocked. Be sure to unblock your telephone line ID when using our service. The code for enabling caller ID may be included in your dial–up string (as in *82,6776700, where *82 is the caller ID code.)

Before You Begin
Before you begin setting–up your dial–up connection, make sure you know your account information an have it at hand. To learn more about your CSUN Username & Password, visit http://www.csun.edu/it/services/useridandpass.html or call the IT Help Desk at (818) 677–1400.
Set–Up Connection Icon
- Click the Start button and select Settings, then Control Panel.
- Inside the Control Panel window under Pick a Category, select Network and Internet Connections.
- In Network and Internet Connections under Pick a task select Set up or change your Internet connection.
- The Internet Properties window opens. Select the Connections tab. Click the Setup button at the top where it reads: To set up an Internet Connection, click Setup.
- The New Connection Wizard opens. Click Next to continue..
- In the Network Connection Type window, select the Connect to the Internet option, then click Next.
- In the Getting Ready window, select the Set up my connection manually option, then click Next.
- In the Internet Connection window, select the Connect using a dial–up modem option, then click Next.
- In the Connection Name window at the ISP Name dialog box, type CSUN DialUp, then click Next.
- In the Phone Number to Dial window at the Phone number dialog box, type 6776700. If you're outside the 818 area code, be sure to also include the area code. Note: Dial-in is not allowed from phone numbers with caller ID blocked. You don't have to enable caller ID permanently, just each time you make a modem connection. The code for enabling caller ID may be included in your dial-up string (as in *82,6776700, where *82 is the caller ID code).
- In the Internet Account Information window at the Username dialog box, enter your CSUN Username (e.g. xyz1234). Enter your Password only if you want it saved. If others have access to your computer, leave the Password and Confirm password blank, then click Next.
- The New Internet Connection wizard is completed. Please proceed to Step 3 before clicking Finish.
Create a Dial-Up Shortcut on Your Desktop
Creating a dial–up shortcut on your desktop will give you quick access to dial-up to CSUN.
The New internet Connection wizard was completed in the previous step. If you want a Shortcut to be created on the desktop for this connection, check the Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop option, then click Finish.
Set the Dial–Up Properties
- Click the Start button and choose (click) All Programs, then Accessories, then Communications, and finally Network Connections. You should now have a new icon inside the Network Connections window.
- Right-click on the new connection icon that you just created and select properties.
- The dialing properties window appears. On the top of the window you will see 5 different tabs; General, Options, Security, Networking, and Sharing.
- The first tab is the General tab, that window will not need any changes.
- Click on the Options tab. Click to place a check next to both Display progress while connecting and Prompt for name and password, certificate, etc.
- In the Redialing options section of the Options tab it is advised that you set Redial attempts to 3; Time between redial attempts to 30 seconds and Idle time before hanging up to never.
- Click on the Security tab. Only select Typical (recommended settings).
- Click on the Networking tab.
- Under Type of dial-up server I am calling select PPP: Windows95/98/NT/2000, Internet.
- Under Components checked are used by this connection: Only check the box next to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
- Now click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) once to highlight it and then click the properties button.
- The TCP/IP Properties window appears. Select Obtain IP address automatically. Select Use the following DNS server addresses: and type in the numbers:
- 130.166.1.242 for Preferred DNS server
- 130.166.252.242 for Alternate DNS server
- Click OK.
- Now click OK in the properties window.
At this point, you have finished setting up the necessary configurations.
Dial–In and Get Connected
To use a web browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape, or to check your mail through telnet, you must first get connected (as described below). Note: Your Windows XP based computer comes with a copy of Internet Explorer. However, if you would prefer to use Netscape Navigator or Communicator, you can download a copy of these programs from the Netscape Website.
- Double-click on the connection you created:
- If you created a shortcut on your desktop, double-click the icon.
- If there is no connection icon on the desktop, do the following:
- Click the Start button and choose (click) All Programs, then Accessories, then Communications, and finally Network Connections.
- You should now see the connection you created in the Network and Internet Connections window. Double-click the connection icon.
- On the next screen, for the Username type your CSUN Username (e.g., xyz12345) and for the Password type the Password for that account.
- If you did not already configure the dial-up connection to remember your CSUN Username and Password, you can do so now by checking the Save password box.
- Click on the OK button and then your modem should start dialing. It will then tell you that it is Verifying Username and Password and then it should connect you.
Once you are connected you should see two small computers beside the time on the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Now you can use your web browser or a telnet program.
