Verify Dial–Up Networking is Installed
- Click the Start button and select Settings, then Control Panel.
- Double–click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
- Select the Windows Set–Up tab, then click the Communications option and choose Details.
- Make sure that the Dial–up Networking option is selected.
- If it is, follow this link to "Verify the Dial–Up Adapter and TCP/IP Protocol are Installed".
- If it isn't, select it and click OK. Windows 95 will attempt to install the needed drivers, so make sure you've got your installation disks or CD handy! Now that Dial–up Networking is installed, you can proceed to the next section.
Verify the Dial–Up Adapter and TCP/IP Protocol are Installed
- Click the Start button and select Settings, then Control Panel.
- Double–click the Network icon.
- Make sure the Con tab is selected.
- Both Dial–Up Adapter and TCP/IP should be present, then you're ready to proceed to "Configure Your TCP/IP Protocol for Dynamic IP Addressing".
- If the dial–up adapter and/or TCP/IP protocol are not installed do the following.
- To add the Dial–Up Adapter:
- Click the Add button, double–click Adapter, then scroll down the list until you can select Microsoft.
- Choose the Dial–Up Adapter and click OK.
- To install TCP/IP:
- Click the Add button, double–click Protocol, then select Microsoft.
- Click TCP/IP, and click OK.
- Now your Network dialog box should contain both Dial–Up Adapter and TCP/IP. Select the adapter, click Properties, then Bindings, and make sure the TCP/IP box is checked. You're now ready to proceed to the next section.
Configure Your TCP/IP Protocol for Dynamic IP Addressing
Now that the driver is installed, you need to configure it so it will work with Windows 95. Go to the Control Panel and double–click the Network icon. Click on the TCP/IP protocol and click the Properties button. You should get the "TCP/IP Properties" dialog box.
There are six sections in this dialog box. We'll deal with them in the following order.
- IP Address: Select the Obtain an IP address automatically option.
- WINS Configuration: Select the Disable WINS Resolution option.
- Gateway: Type in 130.166.1.1 and click the Add button.
- Bindings: By default, the Client for Microsoft Networks option is checked. Do not uncheck this option.
- Advanced: No changes needed.
- DNS Configuration: Select the Enable DNS option then enter information as follows:
- For "Host" enter your User ID (i.e., account number).
- For "Domain", type csun.edu (pronounced c–s–u–n dot e–d–u).
- In the "DNS Server Search Order" section, type 130.166.1.242 and click the Add button.
- In the "Domain Suffix Search Order" section, type 130.166.252.242 and click the Add button.
When you're all done setting these options, click the OK button. Then click the OK button in the "Network" dialog box. Windows 95 will ask you to reboot. Click Yes.
Set–Up Connection Icon
Open up My Computer from the desktop and double–click the Dial–Up Networking icon. Double–click the Make New Connection icon. This will walk you through the Make New Connection wizard.
- In the first dialog box which appears type CSUN Dial–In (or whatever you want to call the icon you're about to create to connect you to your provider – the title won't affect the type of connection). Your modem (which should have been configured when you installed Windows 95) should be shown in the "Select a modem:" area.
- Click the Configure button and you'll get another dialog box.
- In the "General" section, select a modem speed equal to or higher than the speed of your modem. If you have a 14.4K modem, for example, you might make the maximum speed 57600. DO NOT, however, select "Only connect" at this speed. Otherwise, you may never be able to connect. Leaving this selection blank will let your modem adjust as the connection needs.
- Don't worry about the "Connection" section, the defaults should be fine.
- Next, select the Options section.
- Leave this unchecked. Now click the OK button.
- Click the Next button in the "Make New Connection" wizard.
- Enter the CSUN dial–in phone number & 6776700. If you're outside the (818) area code, be sure to also include the area code. Note: Dial–in is not allowed from phone numbers with caller ID blocked. You don't have to enable caller ID permanently, just each time you make a modem connection. The code for enabling caller ID may be included in your dial–up string (as in *82,6776700, where *82 is the caller ID code).
- Click the Finish button and your icon will be created.
Set the Dial–Up Properties
- Select the newly–created connection icon (e.g., "CSUN Dial–In"), click the right mouse button and choose Properties. You should get a dialog box named whatever name you gave your icon.
- Click the Server Type button. You'll get the "Server Types" dialog box. In the "Type of Dial–Up Server" section, click the down arrow to drop down the list box. Since you're planning to use PPP, choose that server type in the list box.
- Make sure that "Log on to network in the Advanced options:" section is not checked. Also, make sure that TCP/IP in the "Allowed network protocols:" section is checked. Then click the OK button.
- Click the OK button in the remaining dialog box, and you're almost ready to dial!
Dial–In and Get Connected
- Double–click your session icon that you recently made. You'll get the "Connect To" dialog box. Put your CSUN User ID (i.e., account number) and Password in the appropriate text areas.
- Click the Connect button and your modem should start dialing. After a few rings, the system should answer. If you didn't check your settings and the "Bring up terminal" window after dialing option back in the Connection section, Windows 95 should take care of the rest!
- Press F7 or click the Continue button. Click the OK button, and you should be connected! If all went well, you'll see a "Connected to Dial–up PPP" dialog box.
