This information applies to pages in the CSUN template system. Windows-press ALT + an access key. Macintosh-press CTRL + an access key.

Connecting to CSUN Using Windows 2000 Dial–Up Networking

Please Note:

These instructions are for users who already have a Web browser installed on their computer (e.g., Netscape or Microsoft Explorer).

The campus dial–in service telephone number is (818) 677–6700. Keep in mind dial–in is not allowed from phone numbers with caller ID blocked. Be sure to unblock your telephone line ID when using our service. The code for enabling caller ID may be included in your dial–up string (as in *82,6776700, where *82 is the caller ID code.)

Before You Begin

Before you begin setting–up your dial–up connection, make sure you know your account information an have it at hand. To learn more about your CSUN Username & Password, visit http://www.csun.edu/it/services/useridandpass.html or call the IT Help Desk at (818) 677–1400.

Set–Up Connection Icon

  1. Click the Start button and select Settings, then Control Panel.
  2. Inside the Control Panel window double click on the Network and Dialup Connections icon.
  3. Double click the Make New Connection icon, and, when the welcome screen appears, click Next.
  4. When the Network Connection Type window appears, select Dial-up to the Internet and then click Next.
  5. When the Welcome to the Internet Connection Wizard appears, select I want to set up my Internet connection manually and then click Next.
  6. Next select I connect through a phone line and a modem and click Next.
  7. Now you will be asked for information about the location you are dialing. Leave the Area code box empty. Type in the entire phone number including the area code into the Telephone number box. Also make sure that Use area code and dialing rules is NOT checked and then click Next.
  8. Now type your CSUN Username (e.g., xyz12345) into the Username box and the Password for that account into the Password box, then click Next.
  9. Now type in a name for your connection (this name can be anything that you want, but the name CSUN DialUp is suggested) and click the Next button.
  10. You will then be asked if you want to set up an email account, select NO and click Next.
  11. The last window of the wizard will appear. You are not ready to connect yet so DO NOT click the checkbox next to To connect to the internet... Instead, click the Finish button to close the wizard.

Set the Dial–Up Properties

  1. You should now have a new icon inside the Network and Dial-up connections window.
  2. Right-click on the new connection icon that you just created and select properties.
  3. The dialing properties window appears. On the top of the window you will see 5 different tabs General, Options, Security, Networking, and Sharing.
  4. The first tab is the General tab, that window will not need any changes.
  5. Click on the Options tab. Click to place a check next to both Display progress while connecting and Prompt for name and password, certificate, etc.
  6. In the Redialing options section of the Options tab it is advised that you set Redial attempts to 3; Time between redial attempts to 30 seconds and Idle time before hanging up to never.
  7. Click on the Security tab. Only select Typical (recommended settings).
  8. Click on the Networking tab.
  9. Under Type of dial-up server I am calling select PPP: Windows95/98/NT/2000, Internet.
  10. Under Components checked are used by this connection: Only check the box next to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
  11. Now click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) once to highlight it and then click the properties button.
  12. The TCP/IP Properties window appears. Select Obtain IP address automatically. Select Use the following DNS server addresses: and type in the numbers:

  14. 130.166.252.242
  15. Click OK.
  16. Now click OK in the properties window.

At this point, you have finished setting up the necessary configurations.

Create a Dial–Up Shortcut on Your Desktop

Creating a dial-up shortcut on your desktop will give you quick access to dial-up to CSUN.

  1. Select the connection you just created in the Network and Dial-up Connections window by clicking it once.
  2. In the menu bar of the window, click on File and then choose Create Shortcut
  3. A window will appear telling you that it could not create a shortcut and will ask you if you want to place the shortcut on the desktop instead. Click Yes.

Dial–In and Get Connected

  1. Double-click on the connection you created:
  2. If you created a shortcut on your desktop, double-click the icon.
  3. If there is no connection icon on the desktop, do the following:
  4. Click the Start button select Programs, then Accessories, then Communications, and finally Network and Dial–up Connections.
  5. You should now see the connection you created in the Network and Dial-up Connections window. Double-click the connection icon.
  6. On the next screen, for the Username type your CSUN Username (e.g., xyz12345) and for the Password type the Password for that account.
  7. If you did not already configure the dial–up connection to remember your CSUN Username and Password, you can do so now by checking the Save Password box.
  8. Click on the OK button and then your modem should start dialing. It will then tell you that it is Verifying Username and Password and then it should connect you.

Once you are connected you should see two small computers beside the time on the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Now you can use your web browser or a telnet program.
