Locking Cables

Using a laptop security cable may be one of the easiest methods of protecting your laptop against theft. Laptop security cables are recommended in any location where you may have to leave your laptop. To be effective security devices laptop cables must be threaded through your desk.

Note: Laptop cables are model specific; please ensure that the laptop cable you purchase is designed to fit your laptop.

PC Guardian Laptop Combolock Security Cable

The PC Guardian Laptop Combolock security cable has a 10,000 combination lock and is easy to use and store. It has a lifetime warranty. It has a stainless steel swivel head, hardened steel hook and chrome-plated zinc cable collar. The security cable itself is constructed of galvanized steel with a black PVC coating. A spacebar is included to ensure a snug and secure fit to your laptop.

PC Guardian Slimline Security Cable Lock

The PC Guardian Slimline security cable lock is ideal for small laptops. The lock mechanism protects against prying, rotating and twisting the lock from the security slot. The Slimline security cable is 20% narrower than the Laptop Guardian. The Slimline security cable is available in different key possibilities and comes with two keys.

Operating System Updates

Laptop security includes protecting your data as well as protecting the hardware from damage or theft.

To ensure your data on your laptop remains secure it is important to download and install operating system and software updates as they are available. You can set your system preferences to automatically download and install these updates.
To automatically download and install updates using Windows 2000:

  1. Go to the Start menu.
  2. Open the Control Panel.
  3. Select Automatic Updates.
  4. Select the update option that suits your needs

Automatic – Enables you to specify the schedule the software should follow to update your system.

Download updates but let me choose when to install them. Enables you to install the updates when it is convenient for you.

Notify me but don’t automatically download and install them. Enables you to select which updates you want to download and install.

Turn off automatic updates. Enables you to access the Microsoft Windows website to download and install updates when you look for them.

To automatically download and install updates using Mac OS X:

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Click Software Update.
  3. Select Check for updates: and select Daily, Weekly, or Monthly.
  4. You can also check Download important updates in the background. You will be notified when the updates are ready to be installed.
  5. You can click Check Now to check for current updates.

You can call the IT Help Desk at ext 1400 or visit the IT Help Desk Walk–in Center in the Oviatt Library Garden Level for assistance setting your system preferences to automatically download and install updates.

STOP – Security Plates for Laptops

For $10.00 a STOP security plate is the most cost–effective anti–theft and recovery product available. Whether your laptop is lost or stolen, a STOP plate may increase the chances of your laptop being returned to you. STOP security plates significantly reduce the percentage of theft by clearly marking your equipment as an obvious liability for any would–be thief.
