Web Enhancement Project: Web Migration

Introduction

As part of CSUN’s ongoing web improvement project, IT migrated the university’s current web presence into a more robust and scalable environment. The new web environment is comprised of multi-server hardware which has replaced the single-server hardware platform. This updated infrastructure is located on the new "webdrive." This drive is dedicated to host all web content that was previously stored on the "udrive."

What are the benefits of the new web environment?

  • Updated versions of web services are now available.
  • A new "webdrive" now hosts all CSUN web services.
  • The "udrive" is now dedicated to personal storage.
  • Additional features and added security are now available.

Note: Only web content that was previously stored in the "public_html" folder on the "udrive" is impacted by this change. Content hosted on other web servers or systems, such as WebCT, was not affected.

Project Timeline

May 4th: Testing period started. Web content users tested all web sites for full functionality and reported any issues or problems to the Web Migration Support Team.

May 22nd: Testing period ended. Any content display issues found during testing were resolved.

May 26th: Migration complete and all web content became production on the new "webdrive."

August 1st: The public_html folder in the "udrive" was renamed to "obsolete_public_html_archive."

Content Review

For instructions on reviewing content on the new web environment, visit the Content Review page.

Content owners who use .htaccess to control some of their content will need to update some information on their files. Please view the Web Migration: .htaccess page to view these changes.

Faculty using either Contribute or Dreamweaver to edit their pages will have to modify their settings to access their pages in the new environment. To learn how, visit the Content Review page.

Students with web content stored on the "udrive" did not participate in the testing phase. All student web pages were automatically copied to the new environment on May 23rd.

Mapping the new "webdrive"

Content owners who need assistance mapping the the new "webdrive" can visit the "Mapping the "webdrive" page.

Content owners who access their public_html in the "udrive" via FTP or SSH should access those locations as usual. You will find a new link in your home directory at the same level of your public_html directory named "webdrive". Accessing this link will lead you into the content in the new environment.

Content owners who map the "udrive" from a UNIX system connect through "csun1". For UNIX users, IT has added the prefix "~/webdrive". Instead of updating to "~/public_html, they will update to "~/webdrive/public_html".
