What other Study Abroad Programs are affiliated with CSUN?

California State University, Northridge has signed a memorandum of understanding with American Institute for Foreign Study and Semester at Sea. This means that, if you receive financial aid from CSUN, you will continue to receive your financial aid if you study abroad with either American Institute for Foreign Study or Semester at Sea.

IMPORTANT: If you receive financial aid from CSUN and you participate in either of the Study Abroad programs above, please let CSUN's Study Abroad Advisor, Juliet Aylmer, know after you have been admitted to either program. Juliet can be contacted via email at juliet.aylmer@csun.edu. You will need to let her know which program you have been accepted to and when you will be studying abroad. Juliet will forward this information to the Financial Aid office.

If you are not receiving financial aid, you can participate independently; in essence, you take a leave of absence for a semester from CSUN and come back to CSUN after the study abroad program is completed. There is no need to notify Juliet if you are participating in any study abroad not affiliated with CSUN.

Course approvals

There are several things to keep in mind:

  • Find out what kind of transcript you will receive (is it an international transcript or is it a U.S. institution transcript?) This is the first step and will determine whom you will talk to.
  • If you will be receiving a transcript from an international institution, you must contact the international evaluations office (see below) to make sure CSUN accepts credit from the particular institution.
  • Through these programs, you will receive TRANSFER CREDIT for your courses taken overseas
  • Once that is clear, then follow the following steps:

To receive credit for General Education:

For international transcript, please contact international evaluations at (818) 677-3760. Bayramian Hall, Room 150.

For U.S. transcript, please contact admissions office to approve your general education.

To receive credit for courses in major or minor:

Your department's faculty advisor or Chair are the only individuals who are allowed to approved courses in major or minor. Please contact your department directly.
