Got land?

Pagans in the Promised Land -- bookcover

If so, you can thank American Indians and Pope Nicholas V.

The land belonged to the people who lived in the Americas before the Europeans arrived, and they felt justified in taking it, in part, because in 1455 the Pope had given his approval to the conquest of "pagans."  The U.S. Supreme Court agreed in the 1820s.

Renowned indigenous scholar and advocate Steven Newcomb will discuss the consequences of this doctrine and recent legal and philosophical challenges to it.
