CSUN

The Program

Italy is celebrated for its cultural legacy which includes world renowned artists, writers and scientists, thus the Italian Program at CSUN aims to provide students with an outstanding Italian language acquisition and cultural competency experience.

The program offers students the opportunity to either minor in Italian or major in Languages and Cultures with an Option in Italian. The major is designed to provide advanced proficiency and cultural competency in the language option. A total of forty eight units are required for the completion of the major: twenty four units of Italian language and culture courses plus twenty four units in comparative studies of cultures and literatures offered in the Modern and Classical Languages Department (see course listings).

The minor in Italian, requiring completion of twenty one units, is offered to students who are specializing in other languages or academic subjects.

A wide range of FLIT (Foreign Literature in Translation) courses dealing with Italian language and culture are also available to students as part of the CSUN curriculum requirements. Students in the Italian Studies Program who have completed two or more semesters of course study may be eligible for several $ 2,000.00 fellowships. These fellowships require that students continue their study of Italian for the two semesters following the award. Additionally, the Robert Barbera prize is presented annually to a student who has distinguished himself or herself in the study of Italian language and culture.
