HUM 496IP - Big Data Dialectics (Spring 2015)

October 28, 2014

NEW COURSE FOR SPRING 2015!

HUM 496IP - Big Data Dialectics  (Mondays 4PM - 6:45PM, JR 215)
Instructor: Chris McKinlay, Ph.D.

This course on Social Media and Big Data will examine the complex two-way relationship between your online habits and the networks you create that in turn also affect you. By convincing users to give away valuable personal information in exchange for free services, companies gather large concentrations of social data at virtually no cost. In their attempt to monetize this data, companies such as Google and Facebook are increasingly interested in manipulating human behavior. We will examine how details in the design of the software built by these organizations can influence social and economic behavior.  HUM 496IP will fulfill Liberal Studies major requirements and may serve as an elective course for another majors.
