Alissa Thomas-Newborn, L.A.'s first female Orthodox congregational rabbi (her title is officially "Morah" – teacher), will speak about women's changing roles in Judaism.
After serving for 8 months as an intern, Thomas-Newborn was hired as a full-time clergy in the Los Angeles synagogue Congregation B'nai David-Judea. She was ordained in May, 2015 at the New York seminary called Yeshivat Maharat ("Maharat" is an acronym for "manhiga hilchatit ruchanit Toranit" - female leader of Jewish law, spirit and Torah).
