Professor Kligman will discuss and demonstrate the diversity of Jewish music from Eastern European Klezmer to the music of the Jews of Syria.  His presentation will show how Jews have adapted the music of their host cultures and created their own unique sounds.  He will also highlight the special role that music plays in helping to preserve Jewish culture.

Mark Kligman (PhD in Musicology from New York University) holds the Mickey Katz Endowed Chair in Jewish Music at UCLA.  He specializes in the liturgical traditions of Middle Eastern Jewish communities and various areas of popular Jewish music.  He is the academic chair of the Jewish Music Forum and co-editor of the journal Musica Judaica. He is also on the board of the Association for Jewish Studies.
