Right after the Thanksgiving holiday, on Monday, Nov. 30, the Comics on Screen film series will present its final movie of the semester, Persepolis (2007), based on Marjane Satrapi's graphic memoir (2000-2003) about growing up during the Iranian Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War.

The book, an international sensation, is one of the most talked-about comics of the 21st century. With subversive humor and piercing insight, it bears witness to traumatic political and social change — the transformations of a nation and culture, see through the lens of family, coming of age, and personal loss. A number of CSUN teachers have used it in class. The film, directed by Satrapi and fellow comics artist Vincent Paronnaud, is an unusually faithful, yet original, adaptation of the book, cleaving to Satrapi's trademark drawing style but restructuring and expanding the story. It won a Cannes Film Festival Jury Prize and many other awards, and was nominated for an Oscar. A fitting companion to the book, Persepolis is one of the most unusual and daring animated feature films of our era.

We invite you, and your friends, students, and colleagues, to join us for a free screening and discussion of this powerful and controversial film!
