General Information & Services

Storage Resources:

Having a Backup Plan in place is only as effective as the cohesion between the people, technology, and processes in place. The Department acknowledges that people are the foundation to a sound implementation of a backup & restore process. Therefore, it is our goal to provide you both with the Service AND Support necessary to help you get the most out of the resources available to you.

Secure Backup of Mission-Critical Data

Network-Storage allocation is provided to you at the University level. These locations are secured-storage areas which you may use in order to save your important data, files and documents. Use of these networked-based resources helps safeguard your files.

The following is a brief list of available resources along with descriptions, and a suggested best way approach.

K-Drive:

Upon logging into your workstation, a Networked-Drive is automaticaly mapped on your computer as ‘K-Drive’. This location is a user specific directory which is available only to you, and can be used to store all mission critical data. Benefits of using this networked-drive include:

  • 1 Gigabyte Storage Quota
  • Nightly & Off-Site Backups
  • Real-Time Replication of your files to Backup File Server
  • Local Tech Support to assist you recover lost or corrupted files

Restrictions: University's Active Directory will prevent you from downloading software (any 'exe' files), movies, and music. HHD Technical Support can help you should you need to download new programs. Call ex. 3912 for assistance.

Shared Network Storage:

There are several locations which are used to store commonly used files, and other data shared accross multiple users. Access and Permission is granted upon request and based on certain predefined security guidelines. Please contact the Department if you need more information

U-Drive:

The University provides all Faculty & Staff with networked-based storage. This directory is either automatically mapped to your computer as 'U-Drive' or can be configured to do so. Like the 'K-Drive' described above, this is also a user specific directory which is available only to you. Benefits of using this networked-drive include:

  • 300mb Storage Quota
  • Nightly Backups
  • Tech Support via Help-Desk at x1400

For more information, and instructions on how to access your 'u-drive' from home download the following document: U-Drive Instructions.

Other Safety Tips:

Archive: When possible, archive older data onto CDs or DVDs. This will help you recover files should your computer suffer major hardware/software problems. Remember, all computers will fail at some point!

Flash/Thumb Drives and other mobile media devices: These devices are a great way to backup files you used most. Remember, to 'copy' not 'move' your files to these devices. The goal is to have multiple copies for recovery purposes.
