New CSUN Physical Therapy Center to Make Debut. Officially chartered in 2005, the new center opens its doors to the campus and the community with an Open House on March 23. March 2006.

Students to Test their Knowledge of Food in 'Nutrition Bowl' Teams of university students from across the western US will compete in a quiz-show format game to test knowledge of nutrition at the Marilyn Magaram Center's (Family & Consumer Sciences) annual Nutrition College Bowl on Saturday, April 1. March 2006.

Ronald Fischbach (Health Sciences) co-authored with Irene Clark (English) an article, “Writing and Learning in the Health Sciences,” which was accepted for publication in the Writing Across the Curriculum Journal.

William Whiting (Kinesiology) authored a reference textbook, Biomechanics of Musculoskeletal Injury, 2nd edition, published by Human Kinetics. The book explores the mechanical bases of musculoskeletal injury, to better understand injury mechanisms and prevention.

Alyce Akers (Family and Consumer Sciences) received $149,872 from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, in continuing support of a project entitled “Head Start Hispanic Latino Service: Partnership Institutions.”

Debra Sheets (Health Sciences) received $20,171 from UCLA, in support of a project entitled “California Geriatric Education Center.”

John Van Arsdale (Recreation and Tourism Management) has received $40,000 fom the California Department of Boating and Waterways, in connection with the CSUN Aquatic Center at Castaic Lake. The center acts as a learning center for CSUN students, and a community program outreach center focusing on water safety and aquatics for communities in the Santa Clarita valley

Ben Yaspelkis (Kinesiology) wrote an article, “Effect of high-frequency resistance exercise on adaptive responses in skeletal muscle,” that was published in the December 2007 issue of Medicine and Science in Sport and Exercise (39:2135-2144).

Carole Oglesby (Kinesiology) was a featured speaker at a forum sponsored by the Studio for Southern California History, in conjunction with its exhibit on "Playing Place: Southern California Sports," tracing individuals who have shaped local history through sports. The forum was held in the Chinatown Public Library in April.

Louis Rubino (Health Sciences) gave two invited presentations in China: “Overview of the United States Health Care System: An International Comparison for Reform” at Guangdong No. 2 Provincia l People’s Hospital and “International Comparisons of Health Care Systems: What China Can Learn from Other Countries," at Kunming Medical University.

Annette Besnilian (Family and Consumer Sciences) has been selected as a recipient of the Excellence Award by the American Dietetic Association, which named her an Outstanding Dietetic Educator. Besnilian was cited for her achievements as teacher, mentor and leader in dietetics education, and for her vital role in "leading the future of dietetics."

Louis Rubino (Health Sciences) has been named a guest professor of China’s Kunming Medical University from November 2007 to November 2010.

Dr. Carole Oglesby, Chair, Department of Kinesiology participated as a panelist at a Stanford University conference: Title IX Today, Title IX Tomorrow in April, 2007. Events included a dialogue on Title IX at 35 featuring Billie Jean King. Dr. Oglesby gave a talk about Strategies for Equality in a Climate of Commercialism.(2006)

Sean Flanagan, (Kinesiology) co-authored a paper entitled, "Relationships among body weight, joint moments generated during functional activities, and hip bone mass in older adults." The paper was published in Clinical Biomechanics, 21 (7), 717-725 (2006).

Sean Flanagan, (Kinesiology) gave an invited presentation, “Joint Stability: Biomechanical Concepts and Clinical Applications” at the Far West Athletic Trainers’ Association Annual Meeting and Clinical Symposium in San Diego (2006).

Steven Loy, (Kinesiology) Terri Lisagor (Family & Consumer Sciences) and Kinesiology undergrad and grad alums, including Kinesiology Alumni President, Ismael Aguila (PA Specialist for LA County) organized an LA County Regional Nutrition Forum held in Redwood Hall on April 20th. (2006)

Carole Oglesby (Chair, Kinesiology, and Director of the Center of Achievement for the Physically Disabled) was recognized by the Research Consortium of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD). Organization president, Bradley J. Cardinal, PhD, noted that Dr. Oglesby’s service as chair of the Future Directions Committee Research Consortium over 2005-06 was critical to the organization’s long-term health and success (2006).

Sean Flanagan (Kinesiology) gave an invited presentation at the National Strength and Conditioning Association's Southern California State Clinic. The project, an applied lecture with a basis in biomechanics, was entitled, "The Science of Stability" (2006)

Dean Helen M. Castillo, PhD, RN, FAAN, co-authored a chapter with Sara Torres in the textbook, “Current Issues in Nursing” (Mosby). The chapter is “Viewpoints: Bridging Cultures: Hispanics/Latinos and Nursing" (2006).

Sean Flanagan (Kinesiology) was the lead author on two papers presented at the Combined Sections Meeting of the American Physical Therapy Association, held in San Diego, CA, February 2-5, 2006: “Modifying the Sorensen back extensor test” and “Predicting the number of sessions necessary to improve back extensor endurance following single-level microdiscectomy.” Abstracts of both presentations were published in the January, 2006 issue of the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy (February 2006).

Anita Slechta and Diane Trevathan-Ramirez (both of the Department of Health Sciences) have been elected to the Board of the California Society of Radiologic Techologists (CSRT). Slechta is the new president, and Travathan-Ramirez has been named Director at Large. The announcement was made at the CSRT's annual conference in the San Francisco Bay area. The CSRT represents over 25,000 imaging and therapy professionals throughout California (2006).

Sean Flanagan (Kinesiology) received $5000 from the Life Fitness Academy in support of his project, "Does Kinematic Specificity Ensure Kinetic Specificity?" Tom Chen (Director, Marilyn Magaram Center, FCS) & Christine Smith (Family & Consumer Sciences) were honored with the 2005 Distinguished Achievement Award by the Southern California Section of the Institute of Food Technologists for their work in the field of foods and nutrition (2005).

(November 2005) Miriam Piven Cotler (Professor Emeritus and former Chair of the Department of Health Sciences) has been named as a consultant to the California Medical Association's Ethics Advisory Council. Dr. Cotler is the Director of HHD's Center for Health Ethics and Policy. Carole Oglesby (Chair, Kinesiology) was honored by Soroptimist International of Los Angeles (SILA) as its 2005 Woman of Distinction at the group's "Making a Difference for Women" luncheon.

Nancy Owens (Family & Consumer Sciences) was elected for a second term as vice president for scholarship of the International Textile and Apparel Association.

Jan Tolan (Leisure Studies & Recreation) received $48,100 from the Lily Academy of Japan in continuing support of a project titled, "2005 Lily Academy of Japan Recreation Institute."

Sean Flanagan (Kinesiology) was lead author of "Biomechanics of the Heel Raise Exercise" published in the Journal of Aging and Physical Activity, April 2005. He also had "The validity of summing lower extremity individual joint kinetic measures" published in the Journal of Applied Biomechanics, 2005.

Peggy Roller (Physical Therapy) had an article called "Pusher Syndrome" published in the Journal of Neurologic Physical Therapy.

(September 2005) Debra Sheets, (Health Sciences Coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Gerontology Program) is primary editor on the book, Enduring Questions in Gerontology (new edition) set for release this November (Springer Publishing Company). Co-editors are Dana Bradley, Ph.D. and Jon Hendricks, Ph.D. The collection of essays explores key questions about Gerontology and how the discipline shapes our understanding of the experience of old age.

Lou Rubino (Health Sciences) was guest editor for the Journal of Health Administration in Education, Vol. 22, No. 2 spring 2005 special issue: Undergraduate Health Administration Education: Unique Identities, Benefits, Pedagogy and Issues." He co-authored an article titled, "Emotional Intelligence Skills for Maintaining Social Networks in Healthcare Organizations" in the summer 2004 issue of Hospital Topics: Research and Perspective on Healthcare.

Debra Sheets and Lou Rubino (Health Sciences) co-authored a chapter on "Rehabilitation" in the third edition of "The Continuum of Long Term Care", Delmar Publishers, 2005.

Stephen Sinclair (Chair, Communication Disorders & Sciences) had an opinion piece published in the Sacramento Bee (May 6) arguing that California needs more doctoral degrees in Audiology.

Belinda Stillwell (Kinesiology, Co-Director of the Center of Achievement for the Physically Disabled) had several articles published this year: "Field Hockey" in Paul Darst and Robert Pangrazi's book, "Dynamic Physical Education for Secondary School Students, Curriculum and Instruction, Fifth Edition" and "The Etiology of Anxiety and its Impact on Learning Swimming Skills" in the book, "Preparing Physical Education Professionals: Issues, Trends and Forecasts." In addition, she co-wrote two books with Hosung So and Paul Darst, "The domains of Learning and Their Relationship to Teaching" and "Physical Best Activity Guide: Middle and High School Levels, Second Edition"

William Whiting (Kinesiology) had his reference text book, "Dynatomy: Dynamic Human Anatomy" published by Human Kinetics Publishing. The book details applied anatomy and human movement.

Ben Yaspelkis (Kinesiology) and student colleagues published an article in the June issue of the Journal of Psychology of London, titled, "Insulin-stimulated plasma membrane association and activation...[of specific proteins]... in high fat fed rodent skeletal muscle." Yaspelkis' article, "Chronic aerobic exercise enhances components of the classical and novel insulin signaling cascades in Sprague-Dawley rat skeletal muscle" was published in Acta Physiological Scandinavica.

Barry Devine (Kinesiology, Professor Emeritus) gave an April presentation titled, "Perspectives from Banda Aceh, 2005" at the Unitarian Universalist Church, San Miguel de Allende, on his first-hand experiences and observations in the aftermath of the December 2004 tsunami.

Sean Flanagan (Kinesiology) presented two papers this summer: "The effect of movement, speed and external load on joint contributions during lower extremity extensions" in Cleveland for the International Society of Biomechanics in conjunction with the annual meeting of the American Society of Biomechanics, and "Is the squat represented by a generalized motor program?" at the annual meeting of the National Strength and Conditioning Association in Las Vegas.

Steven Loy (Kinesiology) presneted a paper entitled, "They're Not Alone: Environments that Support Workers' Health" at the California Nutrition Network for Healthy, Active Families Social Marketing Conference in Sacramento.

Nancy Owens (Family & Consumer Sciences) presented two co-authored papers at the annual meeting of the International Textile and Apparel Association in Portland, OR. The first was, "Dress Preferences and Acculturation: a Study of Mexican American and Asian-American Female College Students," and the second was, "Analysis of Sales Promotion by the Gap, Inc."
