Clinical Education
CSUN ATSs gain valuable hands on experience and personal interaction with a patient population during their clinical rotations. They are assigned to a certified athletic trainer who plans their clinical rotation, teaches and evaluates clinical skills, and provides mentorship. During the clinical rotations ATSs will be exposed to, and gain experience with equipment intensive, male and female, team and individual sports. The clinical rotations also allow ATSs to interact with various allied health personnel, primarily the team physicians.
Each student, over a 2 year, 4 semester period, will complete 975 hours of clinical athletic training experience. This shall be distributed in the following manner:
1st Semester - Requirements
2. Attend two-a-day practices in August.
3. Work with their semester ATS mentor.
2nd Semester - Requirements
2. Function with more autonomy during clinical experiences.
3rd Semester - Requirements
2. Mentor first semester ATSs.
4th Semester - Requirements
2. Study 5 hours per week (individually and group) for the BOC examination.
3. Fourth semester ATSs may teach laboratory sessions, assist with practical examinations, and/or assist with the clinical classes.
