10/16 @ 11:30 in front of Oviatt Library
Target Half Dome begins with 1 mile walk around CSUN campus
Your goal for the next 2 weeks is to add 2-5 minutes per day on to the time it took you to do the 1 mile CSUN hike. You can break your walking time up into 3-4 segments a day if this fits your schedule better. Find ways to fit the walk into your day, park a little farther away, walk during lunch, take an evening walk. Your goal by Oct. 25-26 is to be walking a CUMULATIVE 60-90 minutes per day, 6-7 days per week.

It’s time to investigate Yosemite National Park for lodging/camping possibilities so you know your options and when to make your reservations. You can make reservations in the park, on the way to the park, camping, first class . . . it’s up to you depending on time, convenience, and cost. PUT YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK IN your web browser and see all the possibilities! Note that we will be hiking HALF DOME, June 12, 2009, 5:30AM sharp!! You should be back by nightfall and the recommendation is to stay Friday night unless you have someone else driving, as you will be tired. The trail head is on the same side (south side) as the parking lot and can be reached by walking approx. 500 feet down Mulholland. If you park on the other side of Las Virgenes, (by turning left on Mulholland) just cross the street and you’ll see the trail on your left 500 feet past the parking lot.
Continue walking your cumulative 60-90 minutes a day making progress towards the 90 minutes per day total, keeping about the same pace. Consider purchasing a pedometer. There are a variety of pedometers available at wide and varied costs. While not endorsing any particular brand, research conducted has supported the accuracy of the Digiwalker and we’ve been pleased with their customer service. See the following website for information: digiwalker.com The pedometers are less expensive when purchased in bulk – consider some GROUP PURCHASE POWER. The pedometer will be very helpful to you reaching your goals!

Sycamore Canyon Falls
Highlights: Waterfall, beautiful views and the Satwiwa Cultural Center.
Where: Newbury Park, CA
Distance: 5 miles
Difficulty: Easy
Approx. Time: 2 hours
Directions: From Highway 101/Ventura Freeway in Newbury Park, exit on Wendy Drive. Drive 2.5 miles south to Lynn Road and turn right. Continue about 1.8 mi, then a little ways past Reino road turn left into Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa Park on the left side of the road and drive about .4 mi to big parking lot.
Trail Notes: This is not and out and back hike! You can follow the Big Sycamore Canyon Trail, following the signs toward Point Mugu State Park and when you reach a water tank on your right, a half mile from the parking lot, turn left on a dirt road and follow it to the canyon bottom. OR, take the Satwiwa Loop Trail from the Satwiwa Cultural Center and join the Old Boney Trail. Follow the Old Boney Trail to where there is a sharp switchback uphill and out of the canyon (remember this) and go see the Sycamore Canyon Falls (great if it has rained, nothing if it hasn’t). Go back to the trail and follow the switchback uphill. In about ¾ mile, the road will fork (straight (left fork) will take you to the remains of a cabin from the early 1900s. Don’t go to the cabin unless you want to – so at the fork go right on Boney Mt. Trail and climb some more. This will take you to towards the top of the canyon. As you round the mountain and head down, look for a fork and take the right fork down the canyon – steeper and you’ll be heading back towards Upper Sycamore Canyon Trail. At the bottom you’ll hit a T-intersection. Take the left and it will take you to the paved road (outhouse) where you’ll turn right and make your way up the paved road to the water tower.
Pay attention on this hike as you will do it in reverse in a few weeks and find it more challenging.

Sycamore Canyon Falls

Where: Newbury Park, CA
Distance: 5 miles
Difficulty: Challenging
Approx. Time: 2.5 hours
This is an exact reversal of the last hike you took. You can follow the Big Sycamore Canyon Trail, following the signs toward Point Mugu State Park and when you reach a water tank on your right, a half mile from the parking lot, keep going down the hill. Just past the wooden bridge, at the outhouse, turn left and continue for a short bit down the trail and turn right at the fork heading up towards Boney Mt. Trail. At the T deadend, turn left and continue up the hill. This should all look familiar. Challenge yourself throughout the uphill portion to work hard but continue at a pace that you don’t have to stop to rest. The trail will level out and head down and you’ll reach the fork where the cabin is to the right. Turn left and head down towards the waterfall and on down back to the Cultural Center. You’ll see the cabin in a few weeks.

Subject: Half Dome
Dear Dr. Loy,
To make a long story short, I recently climbed half dome and told my mother about it. She sat next to a colleague of yours (Pat Lyon)on a plane who thought you might be interested in a piece of equipment that I used on the cables. To ease my family's fear that I would fall to my death from the cables I wore a riggers belt that I often wear when climbing. I then used a quick draw to attach me and the belt to the cables. I
only used it when allowing others to pass. Several climbers remarked that friends who had refused to ascend the cables may have done so if they had the belt.
Pictures enclosed for what its worth.

Riggers belts tend to be sold from military apparel companies

Quick Draws can be had from REI and others who carry climbing equipment.
