Projects and Services

Projects:

The Magaram Center is a member of the Institue of Community Health and Wellbeing

The Institute is a consortium of CSUN Centers that function in serving the San Fernando Valley Community in the areas of health and disease prevention. The focus areas include obesity, autism, and Veteran's health.

The Magaram Center Goes Green!

We are actively participating in the CSUN campaigns to bring community gardens and a farmer's market to campus. Our role also includes being the community educators on the topics of fresh food preparations techniques, food safety, and nutrient content of food.

F.E.E.D the Kids-The Autism Spectrum Disorder Collaborative (Feed, Evaluate, Educate, Demonstrat)

The Magaram Center in collaboration with What's In Your Lunch Box (WIYL Box), a non-profit community based organization, founded to provide health and wellness for all children, including children impacted by autism, presented the F.E.E.D - the Kids program. Along with a fellow College of Health and Human Development Center, the Center of Achievement Through Adaptive Physical Activities, the 3 day program focused on diet, nutrition education, adaptive exercise, and advocacy. Lead by the Magaram Center Internship Director, Kathy Soltani, MPH, RD, the interns reviewed and evaluated pre-program nutritional surveys. The information from the surveys was used to design nutrition displays and develop and present interactive nutrition education modules. Our next program is scheduled for October 24, 2009 at the Jeffery Foundation.

Services:

The Marilyn Magaram Center offers many services to students and the community. From Diet Analysis to bi-monthly film showings, the MMC has educational opportunities for everyone.

Bod Pod:

The Marilyn Magaram Center is very lucky to present a new addition to the Nutrition Assessment Laboratory, the BOD POD Gold Standard Body Composition Tracking System by Life Measurement, Inc.

The BOD POD Gold Standard is an Air Displacement Plethysmograph, which uses whole-body densitometry to determine body composition in adults and children. This system measures body composition by determining Body Mass and Body Volume. By calculating these two variables, Body Density is computed and used with an equation to provide body composition information.

This system is able to accommodate a wide range of the population. MMC interns will be able to provide clients with information on fat and fat-free mass, Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR), and Total Energy Expenditure (TEE) in just five minutes.

This amazing service is available to:

CSUN students for a price of $25.

CSUN faculty and staff for a price of $30.

Community members and family members of CSUN faculty and students for a price of $35.

Diet Analysis:

The Marilyn Magaram Center can analyze your daily diet and provide an analysis of what you're eating and the quality of your diet. Participants get a detailed analysis of their diet and summary of the daily intake of carbohydrates, proteins and fats.

The diet analysis compares the participant’s diets with the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) for various nutrients including vitamins and minerals. After diet analysis reports are generated MMC student interns help participants to realize the strengths and weaknesses of their eating habits.

The interns can also provide healthy and fun recipes to help encourage and motivate healthy eating. The diet analyses are offered at special discounted price of $5.00 for CSUN students, faculty and staff.

The service fee for community members and family members of CSUN faculty and students is $25.00.
