STUDENT INTERNSHIPS For Spring 2010
The Marilyn Magaram Center for Food Science, Nutrition and Dietetic offers a number of student internships for undergraduate and graduate students. A brief description of each internship is listed below. For specific information please click on the internship.
Ask the Dietitian:
In this internship, students will work under the direction of a Registered Dietitian to set up and oversee a booth at a local farmers’ market in Encino providing food samples and nutrition education to market patrons.
Brown Bag Film Series:
Films and/or speakers that cover relevant topics in the field of food science and/or nutrition are showcased regularly throughout the semester. The intern who oversees this program is responsible for identifying speakers and/or films that will address current topics of interest in the field and planning all aspects of the event.
Child Care Food Service:
In this internship, students will work as collaborative team work under the direction of the Lab School Food Service Coordinator to plan, prepare and serve lunch and snacks to pre-school aged children at the Child and Family Studies Center at CSUN. Menus are planned and meals prepared in accordance with accepted nutrition guidelines (CACFP).
Food Chemistry Laboratory Assistant:
This internship will allow a student to assist and coordinate with the FCS Department Instructional Support Assistant and course instructors using the Food Chemistry laboratory (SQ134) to oversee the use, care and maintenance of the equipment and supplies the lab.
Food Science Laboratory Assistant:
This internship will allow the students to assist and coordinate with the FCS Department Instructional Support Assistant and course instructors using the lab to oversee the use, care and maintenance of the equipment and supplies in Theriot Laboratory (SQ 110/112).
Afterschool Nutrition Coach:
The Nutrition Coach will conduct healthy cooking classes with middle school students at Patrick Henry Middle School focusing on the benefits and techniques of eating healthy. Main topics will include: creating a balanced life-style, serving sizes, food groups, and how to take small steps towards
maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This program will gladly accept a team of students who can work together toimplement the classes as a group.
VA Hospital, MOVE! Program:
In this internship, students work under the supervision of a Registered Dietitian to assist with the implementation of MOVE! classes, a weight management program for veterans located at the VA Sepulveda Ambulatory Care facility in North Hills. Students will assist with planning and teaching the ongoing 8‐weeks classes covering topics such as behavior change, label reading,
dining out and stress management.
Important Points:
- Some internships may offer course credit and/or a stipend. This is determined each semester.
- Internships will be filled based upon the applicant’s qualifications for the positions applied for.
- Please see our application and the complete internship position descriptions for complete details about each
internship including time commitments and qualifications.
- Students may apply for as many internship positions as they would like although they will only be offered one
position per semester.
- In any given semester, if there are no qualified applicants for a particular position, it may not be filled for that
semester.
