Family Studies
The Family Studies option provides students with a strong background in individual and family development,and interactions. The focus is on reciprocal relationships between individuals, families, communities and the larger society. Graduates are ready to work in professions that enhance the lives of individuals and their families.
All Students in the Family Studies option receive group advisement each semester from faculty advisors:
- Dr. Angie Giordano (on sabbatical)
- Dr. Jerry Ann Harrel-Smith
- Dr. Ana Lucero-Liu
Students are encouraged to network through professional organizations such as:
- The American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS)
- The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC)
- The National Council on Family Relations (NCFR)
- Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD)
Childcare and Administration Pattern A:
The Childcare and Administration Pattern is for students who desire a career in early childcare systems. This program meets requirements for certification by the State of California Department of Education, Child Development Division
Family Services Pattern B:
The Family Services Pattern is for students who wish to work in social services or other helping professions.

Students may apply their newly acquired professional skills at the Child and Family Studies Center located on campus. The highly acclaimed program is accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Education Programs (NAECE).
