Frequently Asked Questions

About Advisement:

Q: I need help! Where can I get advisement?

A: Your major department has advising faculty for your area of study and they are available to help you. Check your department's main office for information. Links to departments can be found along the bottom of this page. You can also visit HHD Student Services/EOP for your advisement needs.

Q: Why do I need to get advisement every semester? Is it really necessary?

A: Yes! Staying in touch with your advisor and adhering to your academic plan will facilitate your graduation and save you time and money. It's important to make sure you get the classes you need - and advisement can help you plan ahead as not all courses are offered every semester. Regular advisement helps you work out your strategy and stick to your plan to get you to graduation.

FAQ's about Financial Aid:

Q: Why didn’t I qualify for Financial Aid this year?

A: Check your Student Aid Report (SAR). If your form is correct, go to the Financial Aid office and see a Financial Aid Counselor. If your form has errors, make corrections and send it back to the Processing Center at the address on the SAR form.

Q: Why didn’t I get the Educational Opportunity (EOP) Grant this year?

A: Chances are that by the time you completed your file with Financial Aid, there was no more money available. EOP has an X number of dollars to give to EOP students and we have more EOP students than we have money to give out. Always submit your Financial Aid application and mail it on January 1st . Be sure to get proof of mailing from the post office and secure this receipt. When you receive the SAR, if it shows a received date that is much later than your January 1 mailing date, take the receipt to the Financial Aid office so they can rectify this for you. Also you must be sure your file is complete. Always make copies of everything you turn in, and keep them handy in case they ask you for information that you have already submitted. If you have copies, you can give them the documents again. Always make sure you keep copies of everything you turn in!

Q: Do you think I should accept the loan Financial Aid is offering me?

A: Loans will have to be paid back 6 months after you graduate from (or leave) California State University, Northridge. It is recommended that if this loan is absolutely necessary for you, take it. If you can manage without borrowing money, don't take the loan. That way, if you need it in the future you can take it. The Perkins and any Unsubsidized Loan can be transferred to Work Study. In order to do this, you need to go and see Josefina Carbajal in Bayramian Hall room 130 and ask her to do the transfer. You will have to find a job on campus and work-off the loan instead of having to pay it at the end of your stay at CSUN.
