Independent Study

Enrollment in Independent Study (CADV 499) is by permission of the Department Chair and with the consent of an instructor who agrees to be a sponsor. Students may enroll in 1, 2 or 3 units of CADV 499 depending on the extent of the project. Students who are on probation or who have been disqualified and have not yet completed academic readmission requirements may not enroll in CADV 499 courses.

Your first step in this endeavor is to talk with a member of the Child and Adolescent Development Faculty to determine if he or she would be interested in working with you on an Independent Study course. If the faculty member agrees to sponsor you, you will jointly draw up a contract that describes the content and scope of the independent project. This contract then must be approved by the Department Chair.

Regular progress meetings with the faculty sponsor and a final written report are required before credit can be given for the course. The maximum number of units from CADV 499 courses that can be counted toward the baccalaureate degree is six (6) units in a major and three (3) additional units outside the major. Enrollment in Independent Study is not allowed for the purpose of substitution for an existing course. Independent Study is related to a major course of study and is not available for meeting a General Education requirement.

For further information, please contact Dr. Harold Smith, Interim Department Chair, Child and Adolescent Development.
