(Part-Time) Courses or Specializations

CADV 150 Foundations of Child and Adolescent Development

Candidates must possess a Master’s degree (doctorate preferred) in child development, developmental psychology, educational psychology or a closely-related discipline and have a generalist background within the field of child and adolescent development that allows effective teaching of an introductory-level course.  Evidence of successful college level teaching experience is required.  It is highly desirable to provide evidence of effective teaching in this content area.  Candidates who incorporate cultural perspectives on child and adolescent development in their teaching are encouraged to apply and candidates who have a background in educational psychology and/or working with pre-service teachers are strongly encouraged to apply. Experience mentoring students from culturally diverse background, and/or the ability to teach an online course is highly desirable. 


CADV 196A/B Jumpstart Northridge

Candidates must possess a Master’s degree (doctorate preferred) in child development, developmental psychology, educational psychology or a closely-related discipline and must be able to help students apply theories of development in a community-based program that fosters early literacy, school readiness, social competence, and family involvement.  Demonstration of innovative, successful college teaching with a diverse student population and work experience with children and families of diverse backgrounds required. 


CADV 250 The Child and Adolescent Development Profession

Candidates must possess a Master’s degree (doctorate preferred) in child development, developmental psychology, educational psychology or a closely-related discipline and have expertise in topics related to career exploration within the field of child and adolescent development and current issues in the field.  Evidence of successful college level teaching experience is required.  It is highly desirable to provide evidence of effective teaching in this content area.  Candidates who incorporate cultural perspectives on child and adolescent development in their teaching are encouraged to apply.  Experience mentoring students from culturally diverse backgrounds, and/or the ability to teach an online course is highly desirable. 


CADV 350 Applied Cognitive Development

Candidates must possess a Master’s degree (doctorate preferred) in child development, developmental psychology, educational psychology or a closely-related discipline and have expertise in applied cognitive development during childhood or adolescence.  Evidence of successful college level teaching experience is required.  It is highly desirable to provide evidence of effective teaching in this content area.  Expertise can include cognitive processes as broadly defined (e.g., cognitive science, language development, perception, brain-based learning, creativity, literacy/math/science in K-8 education, problem solving and reasoning, mental representation, meta-cognition, cultural contexts of learning, socio-cultural perspectives, social cognition).  Candidates who incorporate cultural perspectives on child and adolescent development in their teaching are encouraged to apply.  Experience mentoring students from culturally diverse backgrounds, and/or the ability to teach an online course is highly desirable. 


CADV 352 Applied Social Development

Candidates must possess a Master’s degree (doctorate preferred) in child development, developmental psychology, educational psychology or a closely-related discipline and have expertise in applied social development during childhood or adolescence.  Evidence of successful college level teaching experience is required.  It is highly desirable to provide evidence of effective teaching in this content area.  Expertise can include social processes as broadly defined (e.g., social cognition, peer relationships, gender socialization, attachment, sense of self, identity formation, parenting, socialization processes, self-regulation, moral development, childhood aggression, pro-social behavior, school climate).  Candidates who incorporate cultural perspectives on child and adolescent development in their teaching are encouraged to apply.  Experience mentoring students from culturally diverse backgrounds, and/or the ability to teach an online course is highly desirable. 


CADV 380 Methods of Child and Adolescent Study

Candidates must have a strong background in research methodology and possess a Master’s degree in child development, educational psychology, or a closely-related discipline.  Evidence of successful college level teaching experience is required.  It is highly desirable to provide evidence of effective teaching in this content area.  Candidates need to demonstrate expertise in the research methods (both quantitative and qualitative methods preferred), and must also be able to successfully mentor undergraduate students with independent research projects.  Candidates who can effectively integrate general concepts of research methods with the specific issues related to the study of children and adolescents will be given priority.  Experience mentoring students from culturally diverse backgrounds, and/or the ability to teach an online course is highly desirable. 


CADV 394B/CADV 494B Child and Adolescent Development Internship

Candidates must possess a Master’s degree (doctorate preferred) in child development, developmental psychology, educational psychology or a closely-related discipline.  Candidates must have a strong background in connecting theory-to-practice and supervising/coordinating undergraduate students working in the communityEvidence of successful college-level teaching experience is required. It is highly desirable to provide evidence of effective teaching in this content area.  Candidates need to demonstrate expertise in coordinating and supervising an internship program for senior-level undergraduate students.  In addition, candidates must also be able to effectively teach bi-weekly professional development seminars.  Experience teaching and mentoring students from culturally diverse backgrounds is highly desirable.


CADV 406/L Enhancing Childhood Creativity (with Lab)

Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in child development, educational psychology or a closely-related discipline.  Evidence of successful college level teaching experience is requiredIt is highly desirable to provide evidence of effective teaching in this content area.  Candidates are encouraged to demonstrate expertise in the integration and application of creativity theories with children and adolescents and supervision of university students’ lab work.  Expertise can include knowledge of creative cultural traditions and designing and implementing effective creative experiences. Experience teaching and mentoring students from culturally diverse backgrounds is highly desirable.


CADV 450 Helping Children Cope with Medical Environments

Candidates must possess a Master’s degree (doctorate preferred) in child development, developmental psychology, educational psychology or a closely-related discipline.  Evidence of successful college level teaching experience is requiredIt is highly desirable to provide evidence of effective teaching in this content area.  Candidates need to demonstrate expertise in the major theories of development and their practical applications during childhood and adolescence.  Expertise can include the developmental impact of illness, injury, and disability on children and adolescents.  Candidates who incorporate cultural perspectives on child and adolescent development in their teaching are encouraged to apply.  Experience mentoring students from culturally diverse backgrounds, and/or the ability to teach an online course is highly desirable.


CADV 451 Alternative Approaches to Discipline

Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in child development, developmental psychology, educational psychology or a closely-related discipline.  Evidence of successful college level teaching experience is required. It is highly desirable to provide evidence of effective teaching in this content area.  Candidates need to demonstrate expertise in the major theories of discipline and their practical applications during childhood and adolescence.  Experience mentoring students from culturally diverse backgrounds, and/or the ability to teach an online course is highly desirable. 


CADV 452 Child Advocacy

Candidates must possess a Master’s degree (doctorate preferred) in child development, developmental psychology, educational psychology or a closely-related discipline.  Evidence of successful college level teaching experience is required.  It is highly desirable to provide evidence of effective teaching in this content area.  Candidates need to demonstrate expertise in the major theories of development and their practical applications during childhood and adolescence.  Specific expertise should include knowledge of local, state, and national advocacy organizations and their influence on public policy.  Candidates who incorporate cultural perspectives on child and adolescent development in their teaching are encouraged to apply.  Experience mentoring students from culturally diverse backgrounds, and/or the ability to teach an online course is highly desirable.


CADV 460 Race, Ethnicity, Gender and Culture in Development

Candidates must possess a Master’s degree (doctorate preferred) in child development, developmental psychology, educational psychology or a closely-related discipline and have expertise in ethnic and racial socialization in children and adolescents.  Evidence of successful college level teaching experience is required.  It is highly desirable to provide evidence of effective teaching in this content area.  Expertise can include ethnic identity development, multiracial/multiethnic identity development, the achievement gap, resiliency, children’s experiences with racial discrimination, and social processes as broadly.  Candidates who incorporate cultural perspectives on child development in their teaching are encouraged to apply.  Experience mentoring students from culturally diverse backgrounds, and/or the ability to teach an online course is highly desirable.


CADV 470 Advanced Concepts & Theories of Development

Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in child development, developmental psychology, educational psychology or a closely-related discipline and have expertise in theories and concepts of child and adolescent developmentEvidence of successful college level teaching experience is required.  It is highly desirable to provide evidence of effective teaching in this content area.  Expertise can include classic theorists in child and adolescent development, application of theories to practice (e.g., research, limitation of theories), contemporary topics (e.g., gender development, socialization of parents and peers, cognitive development, adolescence and identity development, risk & resiliency, academic performance of ethnic minority students, or advocacy), and professional and career development. Experience mentoring students from culturally diverse backgrounds, and/or the ability to teach an online course is highly desirable.


CADV 495-A Child and Adolescent Development Graduate School Skills and Applied Research Training I
