Here's How to Find Calm in the Chaos

We hurry, we rush, we race for the finish—even at the expense of our peace of mind. But if we can take some time each day to be alone with our thoughts, we can calm the mental noise. Focusing on the present moment allows a refreshed perspective to emerge. This is the heart of mindfulness based wellness, and wellness is at the heart of our healthcare disciplines in the College of Health and Human Development. Nursing alumna Mohinder Sethi participated in our Professor for a Day event last spring, visiting Nursing classes to talk to students about how she uses mindfulness every day in her work as Director of Patient Care Services for Preferred Excellent Healthcare (PEC) and as an Integrative Nursing Coach.  Read more

What started out as a networking luncheon in the LA Fashion District grew into an afternoon of inspiration.  Nick Verreos, season-two winner of Project Runway made a special appearance to show some of his new fashion line and tell them how he got where he is. College Receives $2 Million to Increase Diversity in Health Care Careers

The College of Health and Human Development has been awarded a five-year, $2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to address the educational gap of Hispanics and other underrepresented groups in health care-related graduate programs. The initiative is called, CAMINO, which in Spanish translates to "pathway." Read more

If you stood in the middle of the Staples Center complex in downtown Los Angeles you'd be surrounded by 23 restaurants, a 14-theater movieplex, corporate office buildings, the 7,100-seat Nokia Theater, the Grammy Museum and the Staples Center--the world-famous arena that hosts the Lakers, Clippers, Kings the Sparks. And you’d also find CSUN alum and Staples Center President, Lee Zeidman ’78 (Experimental Psychology) ’80 (Recreation and Tourism Management), making sure everything is running at full capacity. Magaram Center Uses Most Advanced Health Assessment Technology: Bod Pod

The Marilyn Magaram Center for Food Science, Nutrition and Dietetics offers a modern health assessment tool for the campus and community to utilize. “The Bod Pod Gold Standard is the newest tool in body fat composition assessment technology," said Family and Consumer Sciences graduate student, and Bod Pod technician, Simona Hradil. The Health Assess Program (HAP) will use the Bod Pod to give athletes and the general public more accurate readings. “They not only know what goals to set for themselves, but also what goals to set for themselves nutritionally,” Hradil said.
