Annette Besnilian is the Director of the CSUN accredited Dietetic Internship Program and a full-time faculty teaching Nutrition, Dietetics and Food Science Classes to graduate students at California State University Northridge (CSUN) Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. She is also Executive Director of the Marilyn Magaram Center for Food Science, Nutrition and Dietetics.
Besnilian holds a BS from California State University, Northridge. She received her Masters in Public Health Nutrition from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) while completing her Dietetic Internship at the Veterans Affairs Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. She is a Registered Dietitian (RD) and a Certified Lactation Educator (CLE) and will complete her doctorate at California State University, Northridge Educational Leadership in May 2013.
She currently has affiliation agreements with over 40 community, administrative, and clinical sites throughout LA County, primarily in the San Fernando Valley. She has written two Dietetic Internship Self Studies and has successfully completed the accreditation process and site visit for California State University, Northridge and Northeast Valley Health Corporation WIC Program. She has been a DI Director for over 11 years and has trained and graduated approximately 98 dietetic interns and registered dietitians (RD)s. She was the recipient of the diversity action award from the American Dietetic Association, 2010-2012. She is implementing a peer mentoring program to help increase the number of diverse students in dietetic programs. She has made great efforts on the development and research of childhood obesity. She has implemented several childhood obesity projects with The SODI program and Northridge Hospital. She has obtained several program development and research grants. Throughout her career she has received numerous awards and recognitions such as Outstanding Dietetic Educator award from the American Dietetic Association (ADA), Excellence in Education from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, The Young Dietitian of the year award from ADA. Nominated for Outstanding Faculty Award at CSUN 2010 and 2011, Don Dorsey Mentoring Award and the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences 2010 Award, to name a few. She is a member of numerous organizations such as; California Dietetic Association (CDA), Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (A.N.D.) previously known as American Dietetic Association (ADA), ADA State Professional Recruitment Coordinator (SPRC), California Educational Research Association, American Council on Fitness and Nutrition, Kappa Omicron Nu (KON) Honor Society, and the American Association of Family & Consumer Sciences. She is the faculty co-advisor for KON. Working with students and educating them is truly her passion!
