NSF - Research Initiation Grants and Career Advancement Awards to Broaden Participation in Biology (RIG CAA BP)
Two funding opportunities to broaden participation in biology are covered by this solicitation:
1. Research Initiation Grants (RIG) and
2. Career Advancement Awards (CAA).
RIG awards are for beginning investigators (see Additional Eligibility Information below) to undertake activities, such as acquisition of preliminary data or development of collaborations, that will lead to formulation of competitive grant applications.
CAA awards are intended to provide support for scientists other than beginning investigators to undertake specific activities that will enhance their career development and competitiveness for research funds, for example, by acquiring new tools or skills to address contemporary research questions in biology.
The purpose of each is to broaden the participation of and to increase opportunities for all scientists including those from groups under-represented in biology, in order to encourage individuals to become actively and competitively engaged in research as independent investigators. A specific goal of this program is to make BIO programs more inclusive in the future. Thus, one measure of success of these programs will be the number of future proposals received by BIO from awardees of RIG or CAA grants and from members of under-represented groups influenced or mentored by RIG or CAA awardees. Research proposed in this program must be within the purview of the Directorate for Biological Sciences, which does not include research with disease-related goals such as work on the molecular basis, etiology, diagnosis or treatment of physical or mental disease, abnormality, or malfunction in human beings or animals. Research using animal models of such conditions or the development or testing of drugs or other procedures for their treatment also are not eligible for support.
Full Proposal Target Date(s): January 14, 2008 (second Monday in January each year)
For further information, visit http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2007/nsf07560/nsf07560.htm
NSF - International Research Fellowship Program (IRFP)
The objective of the International Research Fellowship Program (IRFP) is to introduce scientists and engineers in the early stages of their careers to international collaborative research opportunities, thereby furthering their research capacity and global perspective and forging long-term relationships with scientists, technologists and engineers abroad. These awards are available in any field of science and engineering research and education supported by NSF.
* Full Proposal Target Date(s): October 3, 2006 (2nd Tuesday in September, annually thereafter)
For further information, visit http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2006/nsf06582/nsf06582.html
NSF - Research Assistantships for High School Students (RAHSS): Supplemental Funding to Current BIO Awards to Broaden Participation in the Biological Sciences
The Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO) will fund supplements to current BIO awards that:
*Foster interest in the pursuit of studies in the Biological Sciences; and
*Broaden participation of high school students, particularly those who are women, underrepresented minorities, and persons with disabilities.
The establishment of Research Assistantships for High School Students (RAHSS): Supplemental Funding to Current BIO Awards to Broaden Participation in the Biological Sciences reflects the continuing effort by BIO to promote increased participation of women, underrepresented minority students, and those students who are persons with disabilities. Only currently funded BIO grantees are eligible to submit requests for supplemental funding under this initiative. The Principal Investigator must be the PI of an active BIO award.
For further information, visit Research Assistantships for High School Students (RAHSS)
