Chartering of Student Organizations

Procedure

The chartering process for clubs and organizations involves a procedure for recognition by two entities. 1) The Office of Student Development and Matador Involvement Center (SD&MIC) offers official on campus status; 2) The Associate Students (AS) offers the voice for student collective self-determination. Organizations and Clubs will be reviewed in both their congruence with the educational mission of the campus and the level of the risk involved both for the student and the campus.

A group wishing to be registered or chartered as a student club or organization must complete the appropriate registration forms provided by SD&MIC. The following information must be provided, or the following guidelines must be adhered to in order to complete the process:

  1. Membership petition with at least fifteen (15) names minimum, of which eleven (11) shall be students of Cal State Northridge;

  2. Complete one (1) "Petition to Charter" form, one (1) charter card and establish a constitution, being sure to provide in writing a clear indication of the purposes, goals and activities to be undertaken; name of organization (No club or organization shall register a name identical to the name of a previously/presently chartered group.); review constitution draft with the appropriate person in the Office of SD&MIC;

  3. Submit original nine (9) copies of the constitution to the Office of SD&MIC; nine (9) copies of the constitution will be forwarded to the Chair of the AS Constitutional Affairs Board (CAB);

  4. Constitution is placed on agenda and assigned a CAB Representative;

  5. CAB Representative reviews the constitution and the meets with the cub representative for any questions and presents final recommended changes at the same meeting;

  6. The club makes only recommended changes, other changes may cause further delay of approval;

  7. The corrected constitution is returned to the CAB Rep. by Monday at 12:00p.m. to be considered for approval at the Thursday CAB meeting. A majority vote of the senate is required for Associate Students recognition;

  8. The granting of University recognition shall be determined by the SD& MIC;

  9. Clubs and organizations will be notified with the result of the recommendation on the charter;

  10. For organizations of national affiliates, chartering attests that the local group agrees to abide by University regulations as contained and enumerated in the CODE OF ETHICS FOR CHARTERED STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS, as well as the local, state, and federal laws.

Please Note: Registration certifies that the local organizations affiliated with a national organization must have a local constitution and/or by-laws that are in accordance with and do not conflict with the University's policies and procedures. If there is any question involving the above stated conditions, the chartering process will be halted, until such time SD&MIC may make an official determination. Chartering resumes and becomes official after compliance of congruency.
