ParticipantsGene and Sue walked alone today. On the right coming down the hill is the Calabasas Peak Motorway where we completed the previous day's trek. On the left is Stunt Road where we begin today's trek. We left at 8:05 a.m.
Walking Along MulhollandMost of the morning was spent walking along Mulholland Highway, which is lined with high roadcuts of 17-million-year-old volcanic rocks.
Stokes ValleyLooking west across the oak grasslands of Stokes Valley to the mountains that are just behind the MASH-filming area of Malibu Creek.
Farm SceneA farm scene complete with horses, goats, and sheep along Mulholland Highway.
Las Virgenes Creek BridgeHere's Sue crossing the Las Virgenes Creek bridge on Mulholland Highway.
Snack TimeWe stopped at this picnic table in Malibu Creek State Park for a water and snack break. Nearby was the Sepulveda Adobe historic site.
Mustard FieldA yellow field of mustard plants carpets the grasslands of the Las Virgenes Valley. Malibu Creek passes in front of the mountains in the background.
Liberty CanyonNear the canyon of Liberty Creek the grasslands give way to a shady forest of oaks, willows, and other trees.
Liberty Creek BridgeThis bridge over Liberty Creek is an Eagle Scout project. The creek had a moderate flow of water in it.
Liberty Canyon GrasslandsThis scene shows how the trees follow the creek in the bottom of the canyon, whereas the grasslands take over on the hill slopes away from the water source of the creek.
Thistle and BeeThis Thistle flower was serving as a snack source for the bee just before I took the picture.
LunchWe stopped for lunch in this nice grassy area at the south end of the Liberty Canyon residential area.
101 FreewayCrossing the 101 Freeway bridge on Chesebro Road meant that we were near the end of the day's trek.
Gopher SnakeAs we neared the end of our hike for the day, Sue was walking on the trail several yards ahead of Gene. This gopher snake crossed the trail between the two of us.
The EndWe arrived at our finishing spot, the Cheeseboro Canyon trailhead, at 1:20 p.m. We made good time for the day.
Shuttle FriendsJust minutes after our arrival at the end, our friends Dick and Lelia Read arrived to offer us cool drinks and a shuttle ride back to our car at the starting point.
