Purpose: GeoTrek IV was a series of 10 hikes led by Gene Fritsche, Geology Professor Emeritus at California State University, Northridge (CSUN). Rather than a long continuous hike over a series of days as on past GeoTreks, this GeoTrek consisted of 10 separate hikes, each of about 10 miles in length and each designed to teach the participants some aspect of the geology of the area surrounding the San Fernando Valley. The purpose of these hikes was firstly to acquaint the participants with the geology along the route of the hike. More importantly, Gene walked the 100 miles to secure support and contributions from CSUN geology alumni, faculty, staff, and other friends of geology for the GENE AND SUE FRITSCHE GEOTREK ENDOWMENT, which awards annual scholarships to geology students at CSUN.
Location: Location of 9 of the 10 hikes is shown on the Google Earth map below. The 10th hike (GeoTrek IV-J) was taken by Gene and Sue while they were traveling in Nepal.

Participants: GeoTrek IV was very successful in getting people to join the hikes and learn about the local geology. A total of 63 intrepid hikers participated in one or more of the hikes. Web pages for the individual hikes indicated below list the names of the participants. GeoTrek IV-A (the first hike) was attended by 22 folks, a record number for any previous GeoTrek hike. This record was broken, however, on GeoTrek IV-H with participation by 24 hikers. The champion hikers among the participants included: Bob Ableson (4 hikes), Sue Fritsche (6), Pam Irvine (4), John Klutke (4), Carolyn Milkovich (4), George Milkovilch (5), Syrus Parvizian (8), Vicki Pedone (6), Jane Rollins (4), and Brian Swanson (4). The following drivers deserve thanks for acting as shuttlers in getting the hikers from one end of the hike to the other: Mike Barth, Susie Bartz, Sue Fritsche, Dick Heermance, Jeff Kennedy, Kris Kittleson, Vicki Pedone, Dina Schwalbach, Lynn Sosa, Mike Tacsik, and Bud White.
Corporate Sponsors: In addition to the many alumni, faculty, staff, and other friends of geology who contributed to the Gene and Sue Fritsche GeoTrek Endowment for geology student scholarships, several companies also made contributions. Three of the companies are owned by alumni (Avalon Environmental Consultants, Bay City Geology, and Global Hydrogeology). Six companies made contributions in response to the contribution of an alumnus who worked for the company (AECOM, ConocoPhillips, Encana, First Data Corp., Occidental Petroleum Corp., and Wells Fargo). We appreciate the GeoTrek donations of these corporate sponsors and, should the circumstances arise, they will appreciate your interest in their company.
