The rocks on which the group is eating lunch belong to the Topanga Canyon Formation and consist of mostly sandstone with some interspersed conglomerate beds. Fossils of marine invertebrates, such as clams (bivalves) and snails (gastropods), are common and aid in proving that the formation was deposited in shallow ocean water during the early Miocene epoch.
