Why Geography?

I have been interested in geography and travel ever since I was an elementary
school student in Canada. I remember clearly my first visit to Chapel Hill, North
Carolina when I was 14 years old. I had talked my father into detouring off the
main highway to visit this charming college town, despite his desperate hurry to
get our family to Florida. I loved Chapel Hill then and I still do today albeit
from a somewhat more geographically sophisticated perspective. My fascination
with geography reflects my interest in "real world" problems and with the
discipline's potential to comprehend them in their totality, and to offer humane
and ecologically defensible solutions to them. I also appreciate geography for
its enrichment of life by fostering a clearer appreciation of diverse landscapes
and cultures at home and abroad.

Teaching and Research

My teaching and research interests are varied and eclectic. I was trained as a
historical economic geographer at Indiana University, so my interest in economic
geography, industrial location and transportation is not surprising. My concerns
about land use and environmental problems reflect my early experience and
studies in Canada and more recent ones in Southern California. For much of my
career, my regional specialties have been Canada, the United States and California.
I have traveled and done academically related research all over North America and
have developed a strong interest in and knowledge of towns and cities most suitable
as retirement places. My current research program is focused on a book project
titled Retire in Style: 50 Affordable Places Across America
