Northridge
Northridge Scholarship Program
The Northridge Scholarship Program was established to honor the academic talents of Cal State Northridge students and promote their future success. Students selected for the merit-based program will find themselves challenged and motivated by honors coursework, meetings with fellow scholars and hands-on collaborations with faculty.
The Northridge Scholarship Program honors new and continuing undergraduates with three distinct awards: Presidential Scholars, University Scholars and Honors at Entrance. Recipients may only be awarded one of the three Northridge Scholarship Program awards during the same year.

The Presidential Scholars award gives undergraduate students the opportunity to work with faculty mentors on significant projects. The prestigious honor is reserved for Cal State Northridge undergraduate students who have earned at least 60 units with a 3.5 grade point average or transfer students who have earned at least 24 Northridge units by the end of the spring semester.
Recipients must be continuing Northridge undergraduates and will receive a $5,000 scholarship, along with a Matador Bookstore textbook discount. Other award perks include priority registration, recognition at the president's fall convocation, a reception at the University House with President Jolene Koester and the opportunity to work closely with a faculty member on a scholarly project.
Applicants will be judged primarily on the quality of the project description. Grammar, structure, spelling and clarity will all be taken into account. There should be a clear connection between academic work, experience, the project, and future goals, along with a demonstration of personal strengths, such as motivation, creativity, self-confidence, maturity, concern for others, and awareness of current issues.
The Presidential Scholars award is funded by Associated Students, Bayramian Family Scholarship Endowment, Blenda Wilson Scholarship, Diane Ryan Scholarship Endowment and Medtronic Minimed Endowment.

Workshops
If you plan to apply for the Presidential Scholars award, you must attend a workshop to ensure you have all the information needed to complete the application. The mandatory workshop will provide useful advice and answers to questions.
Registration for the workshop is not required, but it is important to arrive early and bring a copy of the application. Space is limited and late arrivals will not be tolerated; if seats fill up, you will be asked to attend a workshop at a later date. You are not required to bring your photo ID card, but be prepared to provide your student ID number and CSUN Gmail address.
A current Presidential Scholar and faculty mentor may be present to offer their perspective and answer questions. Your faculty mentor is invited to attend the workshop with you or attend a session separately. Faculty mentors are not required to attend but it may be helpful for those who have questions.
Please visit this page in the near future for a list of workshop dates.
Responsibilities
If you are selected to be a Presidential Scholar, you must develop, complete and present your outlined project during the Annual Presidential Scholarship Exhibit at the end of the spring semester. You must also work with your faculty mentor throughout the award year, submit a complete progress report at the end of each semester and attend all scholarly events throughout the academic year.
For more information or questions regarding the Northridge Scholarship Program, please contact the scholarship office at 818-677-4907 or email scholarships@csun.edu.
Faculty
If you are a faculty mentor, your time and commitment to the Northridge Scholarship Program is appreciated. The success of the program depends greatly on your guidance and encouragement.
Faculty mentors and Presidential Scholars are encouraged to develop a mentoring plan that will meet the needs of the scholar while honoring your ongoing commitments. There is not a set requirement for the level of involvement between you and the scholar, but the student learning experience depends on the level of faculty engagement. The purpose of the program is to enhance the student's scholarly development and prepare him or her for post-baccalaureate education or work.
Here are some suggestions for topics that may be discussed with the scholar prior to beginning a project.
- How often will you meet with the scholar?
- How long will each session last?
- How closely do you plan to supervise the student's progress on the project?
- What kind of expectations will you set for the scholar and the project?
Faculty mentors are encouraged to attend a pre-application workshop for more information. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please contact Veronica Corona, scholarship coordinator, at (818) 677-7075 or email veronica.corona@csun.edu.
Thank you for your willingness to participate in the program.
University Scholars
The University Scholars award encourages the scholarly development of current Cal State Northridge students and students transferring to the university in the fall. Scholarship recipients must be continuing Northridge undergraduates the year they receive the award.
University Scholars have the opportunity to deeply explore their fields of interest and develop mentoring relationships with faculty members. Ideally, University Scholars will use the year awarded to prepare for the Presidential Scholarship competition.
The University Scholars award includes a one-time $3,000 scholarship, a textbook discount at the Matador Bookstore, priority registration for classes and recognition at a reception with the Cal State Northridge president.
Applicants will be judged primarily on the quality of their essay responses. Grammar, structure, spelling and clarity will all be taken into account. The essays must highlight personal strengths, such as motivation, creativity, self-confidence, maturity, concern for others and awareness of current issues. Letters of recommendation that highlight classroom experience and extracurricular activities will be given the greatest weight.
The University Scholarship is funded by the Bayramian Family Scholarship Endowment. For more information or questions regarding the program, please contact the scholarship office at (818) 677-4907 or email scholarships@csun.edu.

Honors at Entrance
Students who have been admitted to Cal State Northridge and accepted to the General Education University Honors Program will automatically be considered for the Honors at Entrance scholarship. If funding permits, the program offers up to 10 scholarships for first-time freshmen.
Admission to the General Education University Honors Program does not automatically qualify a student for the Honors at Entrance scholarship. Scholarship winners are determined through a separate competitive process and must meet eligibility requirements.
Honors at Entrance scholarships are funded through the Scottsdale Endowment. The endowment was established through a generous gift from an anonymous donor who wanted to honor high-achieving incoming freshmen.
Northridge Scholars Alumni
Dear President Koester,
I feel honored to have been selected for two years as a recipient of the University Scholars Scholarship, and I would like to sincerely thank President Koester for providing this opportunity by establishing the Northridge Scholarship Program. This program is particularly important as it recognizes and values superior academic performance and encourages students to develop scholarly skills and to pursue their future academic/career goals, qualities that have helped me excel in my doctoral studies in the field of molecular biology. Dr. Koester's numerous other contributions to CSUN have been very significant as well and have made CSUN one of the top academic institutions of the nation.

Dear President Koester,
I was honored to be a 2006-2008 Presidential Scholarship recipient. The scholarship supported me financially and helped me not to worry about part time, non-major related jobs which often take so much away from studies. During my stay at CSUN I have met many students who worked because they had to sustain themselves and could barely allot time to studies. I have also seen their academic performance degrade not because of their abilities but because of the little amount of time they were able to invest in their education. Seeing all that, I am thankful to you and others who made this scholarship available to us students. I am currently pursuing a PhD in Biomedical Engineering at UCLA thanks to the support I got throughout my undergraduate years. Thank you!

Dear President Koester,
As a past recipient of the Presidential Scholarship in 2007-08, I am deeply indebted for the opportunities the program provided to me in furthering my goal as a professional educator. You were my role model, and I am proud to have been recently appointed as Department Chair for 4th grade at Stephen S. Wise Temple Elementary School. As I continue to pursue my goals in educational leadership, I hope to accomplish at least half of what you accomplished in your career. Thank you again for providing this kind of opportunity to me and other motivated students.
With respect and appreciation,

Dear President Koester,
I would like to thank you in your part for awarding the Presidential Scholarship Award in 2007-2008. The prestigious award allowed me to work closely with my research Faculty Mentor, Dr. Thomas Minehan to research and publish on synthesis of natural and organic compounds using alternative techniques that are environmentally-benign.
I am currently a 3rd-year dental student at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston, MA. My experience in research has benefited me in working with research faculty, compiling data, and constructing research articles for publication.
I wish you the absolute best in your future endeavors.
Sincerely,

Dear President Koester,
Thank you for being the founder of the Northridge Scholarship Program. I am honored to have been a recipient of both the University Scholarship and Presidential Scholarship. Because of these scholarships I was able to have a close mentor-mentee relationship with Dr. Steven Loy from the Kinesiology Department. This helped me succeed academically as well as connect me with professionals in the community. The vote of confidence as well as the financial assistance these scholarships gave me is something I am truly grateful for. Thank you for all your work in making these scholarships possible.

Dear President Koester,
As an alumnus of CSUN (2010) and a past Presidential Scholar (2008-2010), I would like to thank you for the opportunity to conduct my research projects into the effects of post-secondary education on the lives of Deaf Americans, Japanese, and Jamaicans. With your warm support, my first article, "Dandelion Seeds of Change: The Lives of Tetsuji Tomikawa and Mariko Takamura", was published in both English and Japanese in Deaf Life, Education Research for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and Equal in 2009. Following the completion of my research, I also had the chance to work with CSUN Deaf Studies 2010 Jamaican Deaf Community Service group in order to learn more about global Deaf educational systems. These experiences have led me to continue my studies as a Master's degree candidate at the School of Social Work at the University of Southern California. Using my harvest from CSUN, I would like to be able to contribute what I have learned to Deaf communities as an International Social Worker.
From deepest part of my heart, I thank you for your integrity and dedication. You have inspired our CSUN community, even as you are starting a new journey and a new chapter of your life. Congratulations on your retirement!
With Kindest Regards,

Dear President Koester,
Thank you so much for all of the support and generosity you have shown to the Northridge Scholars Recipients and to the program. I was lucky enough to receive the scholarship twice, and to also receive the William Randolph Hearst Scholarship. There are multitudes of ways that I have benefited from both of these scholarship opportunities. Each scholarship has served as a stepping stone, helping me not only accomplish my goals, but also helping me to realize my full potential. They have allowed me to be able to dedicate more time and focus to my studies, as well as allow me to have time to give back to my community and volunteer. More importantly, I was able to meet an amazing group of students who are just as driven, if not more than me, to accomplish their own dreams and goals. Their stories have helped me see that all of us have one person who has motivated us and helped us reach those dreams. I've realized that as a teacher, I have the opportunity to be that person for my students and I am so excited to reach that goal and begin teaching. Your support has helped this program grow, and you have allowed so many students to grow and benefit from it. Thank you again for all of your help and support. You will truly be missed.

Words cannot express how grateful I am for all of the opportunities that CSUN has provided me with. I am especially grateful for the CSUN Presidential Scholarship Program. As a novice researcher in the field of psychology, Dr. Koester and her committee saw potential in my ideas. Knowing that someone believed in my ideas and my potential to succeed, gave me confidence. At the end of the 2009-2010 year, I developed a knowledge base that was priceless. I will utilize the confidence and knowledge base that I developed to help guide me in the future as I pursue a doctoral degree in the field of psychology or education.

Dear President Koester,
I want to tell you how much you have made a difference in my life. As a University Scholar I was given the opportunity to test out creative ideas in a real life situation. This could not have been accomplished without your support, and great optimism for my efforts.
I am so glad you were in my life to see me through the process as a student and outstanding graduate. It is due to your efforts and the great mentors at CSUN that I owe to my success! Have a wonderful retirement as you go on to new adventures in your life.
Most Sincerely,

President Jolene Koester has been an amazing president. While at Cal State Northridge, she took the time to listen to students concerns and accommodate them. As a Presidential Scholar she welcomed me with open arms and provided me with the opportunity to work on a research project with my mentor, Dr. Sean Murray. In addition, the Northridge Scholars Program allowed me to focus on my coursework and elevated the budget cuts implemented. Most importantly it paved the way for medical school and after four years I am now a medical student at Meharry Medical College. So I appreciate everything President Koester has done and thank her for everything she has done. You will truly be missed.

Dear President Koester,
I wanted to say a few words on how much the Northridge Scholars Program impacted my career and my life. While I was always academically stimulated at CSUN, the Northridge Scholars Program brought it to a whole new level by making me present my scientific findings to people who were not familiar with my field of study. It took a great amount of time and effort to both complete the research and word the presentation so that all audience could understand no matter their educational background. This may seem like a small feat, but actually I find this to be a very important characteristic as a future physician. Obviously I need to be well versed in human physiology and pathology, but it is my duty to be a patient advocate and work with my patients for a more wholesome healing. The Northridge Scholars Program really helped me dive into the role that I will be taking on very soon. I am so excited to continue this training to become a physician at Albert Einstein College of Medicine! Thank you Dr. Koester for your work at CSUN, and thank you for making a program that can teach students so much about themselves!
Best,

Dear President Koester,
My years at Cal State Northridge were truly memorable! What an amazing undergrad experience I had! From day one I felt welcomed with open arms by faculty and staff. You personally expressed genuine interest in not only the university as a whole, but also in the students. Even with thousands of students, I still somehow sensed your authentic care and support for me as an individual and not just a number. Your smile is contagious and your joy made every occasion one to celebrate. My Bachelor's degrees in Deaf Studies and Child and Adolescent Development have helped paved the way for me to make a difference in this world. I am pursuing graduate studies at Loma Linda University and aspire to be working within the hospital as a certified Child Life Specialist, hopefully specializing in working with the Deaf and hard of hearing population.
As a University Scholar for two years, and a Presidential Scholar my senior year, I was able to expand on research related to raising awareness of Deaf and hard of hearing individuals' experiences within the medical setting. The experience and knowledge gained as a scholar have been invaluable and I will be forever grateful for the opportunities provided to me under your administration. I am so thankful for your dedication to the university and am so proud of your drive and dignity. Please know how much of a difference you have made in my life and the lives of many others. Northridge will not be the same without you, but you truly are leaving a distinguished legacy of greatness. I know you will go on to do many great things with your knowledge and poise. Thank you for the many ways you have contributed to making a difference in my life and the lives of so many and know that I wish you the very best in all your future endeavors.
With heartfelt thanks,

Dear President Koester,
I am very grateful for having received the University Scholarship. This scholarship gave me the opportunity to work with my faculty and peers in a unique capacity that I would not have gained from coursework alone. The scholarship helped me go above and beyond minimum expectations of a college student.
I recently graduated from CSUN and I am currently interning with the Los Angeles City Planning Department. I plan on applying to graduate school to further my educational pursuits in Urban Planning. I thank President Koester for this scholarship program and thank CSUN for providing me with a solid foundation to launch my career.

Staff
If your department or college would like to award scholarships, you must use the Departmental Request for Funds form. If the form is not used, the Financial Aid & Scholarship Department will return the request and ask that the correct form be completed. This procedure prevents delays related to missing information, such as unit requirements.
Before awarding a student, departments and colleges may consult with the scholarship office to inquire about student eligibility or how a student's financial aid award might be affected. If possible, late spring semester awards should be disbursed to students the following fall.
If you have any questions, please email Kathi Maki at Kathi.l.maki@csun.edu or call (818) 677-2269.
