Dear John Smith,
Congratulations! You have been offered a Federal Work-Study (FWS) award for the 2008-09 school year. California State University, Northridge recognizes the importance of student employment as a component for both financial need and academic pursuit. As a student considering employment with the University, you should weigh the advantages of locating a job that matches your special skills, interest, and/or academic major. The FWS Program is a federally funded program designed to give you an opportunity for work experience. It enables you to earn that portion of your expenses not covered by grants and loans.
It is important to note that if you do NOT work in an authorized work-study FWS job, you will NOT receive any portion of your FWS award.
Here is what you need to do to find an FWS job, and receive an FWS pay check:
- All FWS student employees must read the Work-Study Student Handbook. The Federal Work-Study Student Handbook has all the information, rights and responsibilities that FWS student employees need.
- Please note: There is a separate FWS Student Handbook for students looking for an FWS job in the University Student Union. The process is slightly different and thus if you are hired in the Student Union, you will need to read the USU Work-Study Student Handbook.
- Once you have read the FWS Student Handbook, you need to go back to the Work-Study Student Information section and take Work-Study Student Handbook Quiz. When you successfully pass the quiz, a certificate will pop up. Type in your name, student ID, print it and have it available to give it to the hiring supervisor. If you get a job with the University Student Union, you must take the special USU Work-Study Handbook Quiz.
- CSUN FWS jobs are listed on the Career Center website at http://www.csun.edu/career/students/work_study.htm. Please note: In order for you to view Federal work-study jobs, you will need to register with the Career Center job recruitment system. See detail instructions on the FWS Student Handbook on how to register and view Federal Work-Study job postings. Once you find a job(s) that interests you, follow the application instructions from the employer.
- Print a copy of your financial aid award and take it to your job interview as proof of your FWS award.
- Sign in with Human Resources (HR) located in Room 165 of University Hall. When you are hired, your FWS employer will give you a New Employee Sign-In Form for you to take to Human Resources. Please refer to the FWS Student Handbook or the USU Work-Study Student Handbook for detailed instructions.
- Accepting your FWS award: Your FWS award will appear in the accept status on the myNorthridge Portal after you have been hired. There is nothing that you need to do to have your award appear in the accept status. Your FWS supervisor requests your FWS authorization online on myNorthridge Portal. Upon approval of your FWS authorization by the FWS Office your FWS award will appear in the accept status.
Please keep in mind: Although you have been awarded FWS, we cannot guarantee that you will be able to successfully find an FWS job. If you cannot find an FWS job, the best way to look for off-campus non-work-study employers is by logging on the Career Center website and instead of selecting 'Work-Study Jobs', select 'All Job Listings' from the 'Show Me' drop down menu, then click 'Search", or visit the Career Center located in Room 105 of the University Hall Building for on-campus student assistant job listings or off-campus non-FWS jobs.

Sincerely,
Josefina Carbajal
