Faculty Mentors to University Scholars are encouraged to develop an acceptable mentoring plan with the University Scholar; a plan that will meet the needs of the scholar while honoring the other commitments of the faculty member. There are no set requirements for how many hours the Mentor must spend with Scholar or how involved the Mentor will be with the Scholar’s academic and career plan. However, the purpose of this scholarship program is to further the scholarly development of the student and to prepare the student for post baccalaureate education or professional work. The higher quality of faculty engagement with the Scholar will result in a higher quality student learning experience.
Suggestions for areas that might be discussed with the Scholar include, but are not limited to, the following:
- How often will you meet with the Scholar? Weekly, biweekly, monthly, etc. Or will you meet on an ad hoc basis?
- On average how long might these sessions last? An hour, half hour, several hours, etc.
- Your expectations of what the Scholar will learn, what skills will be gained or enhanced, what the outcome of the project might be; etc.
Faculty mentors are encouraged to attend a Pre-Application Workshop for more information and to have any questions answered. Also, you can contact the University Scholarship Office at (818) 677-4907 or email scholarships@csun.edu.
Thank you for your willingness to participate in this program.
