This scholarship encourages and supports the scholarly development of current CSUN students and transfer students entering the University in Fall 2009. Recipients of the scholarship must be continuing CSUN undergraduates during the year they receive the scholarship funds.
The University Scholarship experience provides developing scholars the opportunity to more deeply explore their fields of interest and to develop mentoring relationships with faculty members. It is hoped that the scholarship year will be used to prepare students for the Presidential Scholarship competition where scholars are expected to plan and implement a scholarly project under the guidance of a faculty mentor.
As a University Scholar, you will receive:
- A $3,000 scholarship
- A textbook discount at the Matador bookstore
- Priority registration for classes
- Recognition by the President of the University
Eligibility Criteria
Requirements:
- Must be a current CSUN undergraduate student or a transfer student entering the University in Fall 2009.
- Must be a US Citizen or Documented Non-Citizen.
- Current CSUN Students must have completed at least 24 CSUN units by the end of Spring 2009 with a minimum cumulative 3.25 GPA. Units and grades will be verified before the first award payment. Recipients must achieve a minimum 3.25 each semester while receiving the scholarship.
- All applicants must have completed at least 24 college units, but no more than 110 cumulative undergraduate units by the end of Spring 2009 unless classified as a Double Major.
- Must attend a MANDATORY pre-application workshop.
- 2nd Bachelors Graduate Students
and those who will graduate before Spring 2009 are NOT eligible.
Applicants will be judged primarily on the quality of the Statement of Purpose: good grammar, structure, and spelling; clearly defined goals and plan to accomplish those goals; and personal strengths such as motivation, creativity, self-confidence, maturity, concern for others and awareness of current issues. The Letters of Recommendation that are based on classroom experience and extracurricular discussion are given the greatest weight.
Application Process
Step 1: A completed application will include:
- A typed Northridge University Scholars Application (Due February 13, 2009)
- Letter of Recommendation
- Academic transcripts
- Confirmation of attendance at a Pre-Application workshop
- Continuing students may submit an unofficial transcript available from myNorthridge Portal
- Transfer students may submit unofficial transcripts from their transfer institution

Recipients
Students who are awarded the University Scholarship can expect to
- Be strongly encouraged to enroll in honors coursework
- Develop a mentoring relationship with a faculty mentor
- Pursue scholarly activities such as internships, research, compositions, additional reading or coursework, conference presentations, or publications
- Make a presentation near the end of the year describing their personal scholarly activities and development
Renewal Criteria
University Scholars will be invited to apply for a one-year renewal of their scholarship near the end of their first scholarship year.
