University Scholars Information

This scholarship encourages and supports the scholarly development of current CSUN students and transfer students entering the University in Fall 2009. Recipients of the scholarship must be continuing CSUN undergraduates during the year they receive the scholarship funds.

The University Scholarship experience provides developing scholars the opportunity to more deeply explore their fields of interest and to develop mentoring relationships with faculty members.  It is hoped that the scholarship year will be used to prepare students for the Presidential Scholarship competition where scholars are expected to plan and implement a scholarly project under the guidance of a faculty mentor.

Eligibility Criteria

Requirements:

Applicants will be judged primarily on the quality of the Statement of Purpose: good grammar, structure, and spelling; clearly defined goals and plan to accomplish those goals; and personal strengths such as motivation, creativity, self-confidence, maturity, concern for others and awareness of current issues.  The Letters of Recommendation that are based on classroom experience and extracurricular discussion are given the greatest weight.


Application Process

Step 1: A completed application will include:

  1. A typed Northridge University Scholars Application (Due February 13, 2009)
  2. Letter of Recommendation
  3. Academic transcripts
  4. Confirmation of attendance at a Pre-Application workshop

Step 2: Submit your completed application to
Financial Aid & Scholarship Department (Bayramian Hall, Room 130)


Recipients

Students who are awarded the University Scholarship can expect to

  1. Be strongly encouraged to enroll in honors coursework
  2. Develop a mentoring relationship with a faculty mentor
  3. Pursue scholarly activities such as internships, research, compositions, additional reading or coursework, conference presentations, or publications
  4. Make a presentation near the end of the year describing their personal scholarly activities and development

Renewal Criteria

University Scholars will be invited to apply for a one-year renewal of their scholarship near the end of their first scholarship year.  Renewal decisions will be based on maintaining a 3.25 GPA, progress on pursuing scholarly goals and activities, and a plan for the second year’s scholarly progress.
