Financial Aid Information
Can I qualify for financial aid to study abroad?
The Office
of Student Development and International Programs can assist
you in choosing a study abroad program that is eligible for financial aid
consideration. For most of these study abroad programs, you are eligible
to be considered for financial aid for no more than one academic year as
an undergraduate student and no more than one semester as a graduate student. The Office
of Student Development and International Programs will provide
you with references to many study abroad programs.
To get financial aid as an International Programs (IP) student, you must do the following:
- Apply and be approved to be an IP participant. Contact the Office
of Student Development and International Programs at
(818) 677-3053 for Information on this procedure.
- Your name must be on a list of final, approved IP participants sent
from the CSU Chancellor’s Office to the CSUN Financial Aid & Scholarship
Department.
- You must apply for financial aid using the current FAFSA form,
available in the Financial Aid & Scholarship Department. CSUN’s
Federal code # is 001153. The priority funding date to
submit the FAFSA is March 2nd for
the following academic year.
- You must complete a financial aid file by providing any and all documents
requested by the Financial Aid & Scholarship Department.
- You must be making satisfactory academic progress.
Other important Information:
- You do not pay CSUN fees directly to CSUN.
You pay fees to the IP Program. If your financial aid is not
enough to pay all the IP Program fees, you are responsible
on your own to pay the balance of the IP fees owed. Again,
contact the Office
of Student Development and International Programs for
information on fees, at (818) 677-3053, or contact Joyce Cury at the
Chancellor’s Office at (562) 951-4790.
- CSUN will send a check from your financial aid to the Chancellor's
Office to pay any outstanding IP fees you owe. Any remaining balance
of financial aid will be sent to your home address. Aid is disbursed
each semester.
- Eligibility for financial aid for an IP student is the same
as if you were attending CSUN as a regular student, except:
- You are not eligible for Federal College Work-Study awards
while participating in the IP program.
- The "Cost of Education" (budget) used is the IP Program
Cost for "your" country as determined by the Chancellor’s
Office
- Stafford Loan eligibility may be increased or decreased depending
on the IP Program Cost for "your" country
- You are not eligible for Federal College Work-Study awards
while participating in the IP program.
- Aid is disbursed from CSUN at approximately the same time all other
CSUN students get their aid, so you must plan ahead to use other
funds if you expect expenses earlier than this schedule.
- For most programs, your eligibility is based on standard cost of
attendance for living in off-campus housing. In some circumstances,
the International program coordinator can provide the Financial Aid
and Scholarship Department with documented proof of higher expected
costs for your specific program abroad. This could possibly
increase your loan eligibility if your were not originally awarded
your yearly maximum.
- If you are required to attend Loan Entrance Counseling to have your
Stafford/Unsubsidized Stafford Loans released, do so before you leave!
- If you were awarded a Perkin's Loan, sign, complete and return the Promissory Note(s), the Entrance Interview form, and the Personal Information form before you leave.
