EMPLOYMENT WHILE IN SCHOOL

The decision to work while in school can be a personal and/or financial choice.  It is a personal decision because you are interested in buying the things you want and would like to create a sense of independence.  However, the more significant reason could be financial.

After you have received your financial aid award notice, evaluate what remaining need has not been met through federal and state aid, scholarships, sponsorships, and other resources.  As you decide whether to work, or how many hours you can work, remember that if you work too many hours you may not have the time and energy to devote to study and homework.  In order to not sacrifice your academic success or to avoid prolonging your education (at costs that increase each year), you may want to consider working fewer hours and asking the financial aid department for advice on additional loans that may be available.  Also, you can speak with a financial aid counselor about budgeting your expenses and where you can cut your costs so that you can finish your education while working minimum hours and borrowing smaller amounts.
