Refunds and Repayments

Refund Information for Fees and Other University Charges

Students may obtain the school’s refund policy online under “Money Matters” or contact University Cash Services at (818) 677-8000, option # 3. A student’s refund (including campus-housing refunds) must be used to repay financial aid received by the student should that situation happen.

Impact of a Total Withdrawal from the University

Student’s eligibility for Financial Aid is based upon enrollment.  The Higher Education Amendments of 1998 set rules which govern the return of Title IV funds disbursed for a student who completely withdraws from a period of enrollment.  These rules assume that a student “earns” their aid based on the time they remain enrolled.  Unearned” aid, other than Federal Work-Study, must be returned.  Unearned aid is the amount of financial aid received that exceeds the amount the student has earned.  Unearned aid may be subject to repayment.

During the first 60% of the enrollment period, a student "earns" aid in direct proportion to the length of time they remain enrolled.  That is, the percentage of time during the period that the student remained enrolled is the percentage of aid for that period for which the student earned.  A student who remains enrolled beyond the 60% point earns all aid for the period.  Check the Schedule of Classes for exact dates.

Financial Aid Repayment

A reduction in units or withdrawal from the university may require repayment of financial aid received. Discuss possible reductions in units with a Financial Aid and Scholarship Department staff member prior to making changes. They will advise you on how the changes impact your financial aid. If you are required to repay financial aid, repayment is due immediately to the university and may affect future enrollment or ability to receive university services.

Medical Withdrawal

Students seeking a medical withdrawal complete the necessary forms at the Student Health Center.  The Financial Aid and Scholarship Department is informed about all approved medical withdrawals.

Medical withdrawals should be carefully considered as financial aid repayments may be required for your ‘unearned’ funds.  Please be aware of the following:

You may wish to see a Financial Aid Counselor to discuss how your medical withdrawal may affect you before you decide to seek one.
