Brief Biography

Dr. Meiqin Wang received a doctorate degree in Art History from the State University of New York at Binghamton and is currently a professor at California State University, Northridge. As an educator, she specializes in modern and contemporary Chinese art and mainly teaches Asian art history courses for the Department of Art at the university. As an art historian, she researches contemporary art from China in the context of commercialization, globalization, and urbanization of the Chinese world and has written on topics such as artist villages, creative cultural industries, art and urbanization, and socially engaged art. Currently, she focuses on socially engaged art and its related categories such as public art, artivism, and ecological art in East Asia.

Dr. Wang is the author of two research monographs Urbanization and Contemporary Chinese Art (Routledge, 2015) and Socially Engaged Art in Contemporary China: Voices from Below (Routledge, 2019). She is also the editor or co-editor of Visual Arts, Representations and Interventions in Contemporary China (Amsterdam University Press, 2018), Socially Engaged Public Art in East Asia: Space, Place, and Community in Action (Vernon Press, 2022), and Art in Action: The Discursive Practices of Chinese Socially Engaged Art in the 21st Century (Beijing: Culture Relics Publishing House, 2023).
