Open University – Your Easy Access to Cal State Northridge

Members of the community are invited to enroll in CSUN undergraduate- and graduate-level university credit courses through the Open University Program administered by The Tseng College.

Credits earned through Open University may be applied to degree work and transferred to other universities.

Open University allows nonmatriculated* students at CSUN to enroll in state-supported university offerings on a space-available basis, with instructor approval. At CSUN, Open University students enroll in courses through the campus self-support unit, The Tseng College. Open University is offered in the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters.

Registration for Open University is easy, since formal application and admission to CSUN are not required. Admission is on a space-available basis for those who meet the course prerequisites.

*A matriculated student is one who has applied and been admitted to a degree program at the university. A nonmatriculated student is one who has not been admitted to a degree program. A nonmatriculated student can take courses that count toward a degree (through Open University) and may apply a maximum of 24 units to a baccalaureate degree and a maximum of 9 units to a master’s degree or credential. Grades earned through Open University become part of a student’s permanent CSUN transcript.

Learning opportunities are available for those who:

Wish to increase or update their competence in work-related fields without applying for a university degree.
Seek new scholarship and approaches that can be applied to areas of professional practice.
Would like to take a course or two before beginning or resuming study their college educations (Many courses are open to high school students who wish to start their college careers.)
Need to finish a few more units in order to complete a university degree.
Desire to pursue personal intellectual interests in any field. (A partial list of university of fields and disciplines appears on the following page.)
