Repeat Policy

In certain instances, students may wish to repeat a course to improve a previous performance. You may repeat up to 15 semester units of CSU Northridge coursework for grade replacement. Students may only repeat courses with grades between C- and F/WU. When a course has been attempted more than once, only the highest grade received for that course will be used to compute the cumulative GPA. All grades will remain on the transcript. The second grade earned will become the grade for the course (even if it is lower) and be used for GPA computation. The first grade received will remain on the transcript but will not be used for GPA computation.

How many courses can a student repeat for the purposes of grade replacement?

A student may repeat a maximum of 15 semester units of CSUN coursework for the purpose of replacing a low grade with a higher one. Repeats for grade replacement are limited to grades of C- or lower. For example, say that you take a 3-unit course for the first time and receive an "F". The following semester you repeat this course and receive a "B". If you have repeated less than 12 units prior to this repeat, the "F" will not be included in the calculation of your grade point average, but the "B" will be included.

Can a student retake a class that he has failed in order to increase his GPA?

A student may repeat a maximum of 15 semester units of CSUN coursework for the purpose of replacing a low grade with a higher one. Repeats for grade replacement are limited to grades of C- or lower. For example, say that you take a 3-unit course for the first time and receive an "F". The following semester you repeat this course and receive a "B". If you have repeated less than 12 units prior to this repeat, the "F" will not be included in the calculation of your grade point average, but the "B" will be included.

What happens if a student has already repeated 15 units and they need to repeat another course?

If the student has already repeated 15 units of coursework, they may still repeat other courses. However, in this case, both grades will be included in the grade point average calculation. For example, say that they take a 3-unit course for the first time and receive an "F". The following semester they repeat this course and receive a "B". If the student has already repeated 15 units prior to this repeat, both a 3 unit "F" and a 3 unit "B" will be included in the calculation of the grade point average.

Can a student repeat a course more than once?

Yes , a student can repeat a course more than once. "On the third or subsequent enrollment in a course, permission of the College's Associate Dean is necessary." The College of Business and Economics WILL enforce the third or subsequent enrollment policy. During registration enrollments will be monitored. Students found to have enrolled in a course for the third or subsequent time WILL BE dropped from that course. In order to avoid being dropped, you will need the Associate Dean's permission. A form to request this permission is available in the Associate Dean's Office (BB 3111). Permission will be given in cases of serious and compelling reasons. This requires evidence that conditions have changed such that prior performance in that course will NOT be repeated. NOTE: Having received a "W" for a course counts as a course enrollment. However, it is important to note that only one repeats of a course is permitted for the purpose of improving the grade. For example, say they take a 3-unit course and receive an "F". The student repeats the course the next semester and receives a "D". Unfortunately, this course is in the senior program and the student is required to have a "C" or better. So, the student repeats the course again, this time receiving a "C". Assuming that they have not yet repeated 15 units of coursework, the original "F" will not be included in the computation of the grade point average. However, both the "D" and the "C" will be included.

If a student repeats a course for the purpose of grade replacement, will the lower grade still appear on their transcript?

Yes , even if a grade is replaced in the calculation of the grade point average, it will still show up on the transcript.

Can a student repeat a course that they took at CSUN somewhere else for the purposes of grade replacement?

Students may not improve grades of courses taken at other institutions by repeating them at CSUN, nor may students improve grades of courses taken at CSUN by repeating them elsewhere.

If a student chooses to retake courses beyond the allowable limit, both the old and new grades will be averaged into the cumulative GPA.

Yes.
